Members wimvdb
Hello, I would just like to double check if this is a regular (real!) Gibson Sg standard. I traded this for another guitar yesterday, but found something odd about the tuners... There was no stamp from gibson deluxe on de tuners. Also 1 screw was missing and up front they have another look compared to my Sg special and LP studio. Also the tuss rod cover seems like it was self-made withoud inscription But i kinda know the symptoms for a fake gibson, but i would like to hear your opinions ! It plays and sounds good anyhow so I believe i'm not dealing with a fake, but stil I'm wondering why it has got other tuners and tuss rod. Here are some pictures: http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rocknsad/media/unnamed%206_zpslahj4vzd.jpg.html] http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rocknsad/media/unnamed%208_zps0t1sitjw.jpg.html] http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rocknsad/media/unnamed%204_zpsyozyl7fm.jpg.html] http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rocknsad/media/unnamed%205_zpsmwd0fhg3.jpg.html] http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rocknsad/media/unnamed%203_zpsvwfpp5ia.jpg.html] http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rocknsad/media/unnamed%202_zpsiakaxb0z.jpg.html] http://smg.photobucket.com/user/rocknsad/media/unnamed%201_zps257p75as.jpg.html] The writing on the puts say 2- 14 – 2008 and the serial checker gives me 2-15-2008. I'm guessing thats normal? I'm guessing this is the real deal... But why the tuners... I allready ordered new gibson deluxe tuners and a new tuss rod cover to make it as authentic as possible (other from the straplocks). But what do you guys think? (Sorry for the bad English, I'm from Belgium...) Thank you very much!
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted February 2, 2015 Moderators Share Posted February 2, 2015 Shame you ordered a set, I took a set off another guitar, you could have had those. It all looks absolutely fine. The easiest diagnostic is that on the back of the headstock you can extra piece glue on. Only Greco in the late 70s, ear;ly 80s did that on their SG copies, everybody else uses wider wood
Members bieke
hey, I'm from Belgium as wellguitar looks legit, some work done, the tuners look like Gotoh to me, actually not badlooks like the the screwhead of lower screw on the low E tuner broke off, rest of it is still in the neck, so you may want to drill out that bit.Not sure about the TRC, some people prefer the black TRCs from an aesthetic viepoint, so it might be not the original oneelectronics look fine to me, but I'm not really an SG expert
Members WRGKMC
It looks legit. The binding is over the frets, truss nuts right as well as the rest. There may have been some rewiring for the volume/tone pots. The yellow and brown wire in there doesn't look stock to me. Maybe they put different pots in there or just rewired it. Shouldn't hurt the value. The tuners are funky though. They have a locking nut in the front but the backs look to be generic Klusons. Those front nuts most likely screw into the original tuners but the backs look to be standard generic Klusons. I think they used the nuts as a conversion bushing when they swapped out the tuners. I cant say I blame them. The stock tuners Gibson used are not Klusons. Thay are some clones made of white metal and use a locking nut. They are were absolutely awful tuners. I'm on my third set on my Paul. The first 2 sets were just fell apart. The third set are Gotoh which seem to be holding up better a little better but they have the same flaws. The problem with them is the back casing is riveted in place and when the tuners take a shot, the rivets snap off and the tuner just falls apart. Standard Kluson's have metal tabs you could bend up and remove the caps, tighten the gears and put the caps back on. If the caps on a Gibson tuner loosens, there is no fix besides welding it back on and with that Metal, that's not going to work. You'd think with the price Gibson charges they could put on some decent tuners. I thought about going with standard Kluson tuners and using conversion bushings, but Its an expensive guitar and I've tried to keep it stock. Members Musicscotty
It's scary that we now have to go over a guitar in detail just to ascertain if it's real or not. I wonder how many Chibson owners are blisfully unaware that there prized possession is a fake .... ?
Members aliensporebomb
It looks reasonable. But I wonder how many chinese guitar manufacturers scour websites like these to see internal construction details so they can create more realistic chibson instruments?
