Members kayd_mon
I just found out about this, so apologies if it's old news. Apparently, they've just released these S2 guitars, which are still MIA, but priced like Gibson LP Studios. You can get an S2 Custom 24 for $1399 ...and it looks just a step above the SE Custom 24s looks-wise. You can also get a Mira or a Starla for $1179 or $1249 (but $1299 or $1369 if you want birds on those models) So what do you think? Would you be interested in a less-frills PRS that's still made in the same US factory? I suppose these are kinda like the CEs of the 90s, except they're not bolt-ons. The question for me would be if it is worth it to pay 2x the SE price. I know that the $3k Custom 24s are better than the SEs, but are these S2s? I like the SE Custom 24s a lot, and I think they're one of the best upper-mid-range guitars out there. The more affordable Mira and Starlas are nice options, but I've seen brand new Miras and Starlas on sale for the same or less.

Members cbh5150
Those prices are MSRP; street's gonna be lower.
Members kayd_mon
They're for sale at Musician's Friend for those prices, so it looks like PRS quoted the street price, which is nice. No one actually sells for list anymore, and I don't see the need for it.
Members cbh5150
Really? My bad, then, and at those prices, I would be looking at their used MIA counterparts for roughly the same (or less) dough like you said.

My number one is a Les Paul Studio so I like the idea of the S2.I would suggest that, in your case, you stop trying to make comparisons. Find yourself a PRS S2 to try out. Once you get to know the guitar simply ask yourself if that particular instrument is worth the asking price to you. Forget about the SE for a bit until you decide if you like the S2 or not. Members billybilly
I'm impressed. I'd love to play one. It will take a bit for them to show up down here, I'll be waiting...
Members kayd_mon
@onelife That's good advice. I think when I said that, I was thinking about the mindset of the average shopper, rather than personally. At face value, I would be far more likely to spring for an S2 Custom 24 now rather than (another) SE Custom 24. I would really like to try one out. If they are good, and if they decide to make one in a nice purple, I would seriously consider selling a couple guitars to get one.
Members kayd_mon
I didn't read everything on them yet, but it says they use a "different process" to keep cost down.
Members onelife
Maybe there is now a place in China named "Maryland."

They look beveled instead of carved for one. I'm sure the tops aren't so blingy as well but that's fine with me... I prefer flame maple over quilted maple. Members kayd_mon
Yes, the tops are beveled for sure, with a little more swoop than the SEs, which got a bevel upgrade a year or two ago. My SE is totally flat.
Members BydoEmpire
Interested. I've been keeping my eyes on used custom 24s over the last year, kind of weighing whether or not it's something I really want, but even those are a little bit more than the S2 series. I have a hard time paying $2k+ for a guitar without stainless steel frets, but for $1299 it's reasonable. I dig the S2 aesthetics and I've liked the necks on most of the PRSs I've played. FWIW, I played an SE semi-hollow last week and it was okay. Seemed like a great guitar for the price, but it didn't blow me away. I also played a Mira a few years ago and really liked it. I'd be interested in the S2 version as well.
Members PurpleTrails
Looking at that first shot, I now have some serious GAS, and I don't even particularly like PRS guitars.

Members larryguitar
I just wish they hadn't made that odd-ball pickguard on the Mira...something about that front pickup ring just strikes me as...odd? I wonder if you could swap it for the standard Mira PG?
