like i always say, theres a reason you can walk into any music store and find 209203 used peavey cabs for 150 that they cant get rid of.

Since Cole didn't hate the Sheffields, I'm thinking he'd probably still like the cab.

Any chance you could try it out cole? That'd be the easiest way to tell.

Yeah, I imagine I could try it out... Just wanted to get a rough idea on whether I wanted to waste my time or not... There is nothing more fun than meeting people on Craigslist... If you know what I mean

It might be my area, but I hardly see any Peavey tube amps/cabs on the used market. I see the XXL amps from time to time and very seldom do I see anything 5150/6505; and up until a few weeks ago, I didn't know they made a 2x12 cab for the XXX.

I would love to own a Mesa/Boogie 2x12, but those are even more rare in my town...

They are built fine, it is those horrible Sheffields. I have a 5150 cab that was OK stock, so I put 4 Eminence Reapers in it and it outshines my Marshall 1960a.

Thanks to Ovid for posting that spec page... I read that the cab is 26.5" wide... My Marshall is 29.5" wide, so there would be some overhang... Is it silly of me to not want it because of this? Damn it, why couldn't it be at least 29.5" wide?

So the XXX 2x12 might be out... I don't know if my OCD would allow the head to be wider than the cab... Does Peavey make other 2x12 cabs?

It's probably made out of MDF, so it will be extra heavy. But, if it sounds good to you, then $200 clams is cheap.

A little OT, but, what makes one cab sound different from another, besides speakers, of course. Most are close to the same dimensions and all.

It has been so long since I have used one... It has been over seven years, and the most I played them at the times was 10 minutes...

                                Cole

As someone who owned a 5150 4x12 for many years and has played most of the other Peavey cabs, my opinion is that their speakers are usually not bad, but the construction of the cabs makes them (and any other speaker you put in them) sound bad. The 5150 cab was tried with stock speakers, V30s, G12T75s and a combination of both the 30s and 75s in an X pattern. It always sounded bad - flat, congested in the mids, and lacking any kind of 3D girth. The same speakers in my Mesa cab sound amazing. The construction quality itself is good - they're nearly indestructible. That doesn't help the sound, however.

So my opinion is to stay away. For around $200 I would take a used Mesa 2x12 over any Peavey 4x12. It will sound better and bigger than the 4x12. My advice is to always go try for yourself, though. Just go to a music store and try a Peavey cab next to a Mesa or even a decent Marshall cab. The difference is night and day.
