    • Some mics over-accentuate the low end if you sing close (your mouth is in close proximity). Sometimes this is very useful, sometimes not so much.

I may re-record the vox with a ribbon mic...which has no proximity effect. Or, I may be a lazy bastard and just EQ the life out of what's there.

        • I wish there were sub-forums of KSS here where we could discuss tracking, mixing, tweaking and such...I don't know anybody over in the H-C recording forum.

          • I don't see why it can't be discussed here. You gotta be a bit thick skinned though, because people will yell at you if you're doing something wrong

But I know you're much further along in your setup/learning curve than I am... so you should be fine...

            • Most people yell because they care, some because they like to yell. Thickerer skin is an asset on teh interwebs.

So, CR, did you like my creepy new song?

              • Oh I know, I'm glad for all those who chimed in to help. I guess it was warranted because I don't really know what I'm doing, especially regarding acoustics I guess, and I don't have the means to buy better equipment or treat my room properly. But baby steps have been taken... and I would open up another thread like it, to discuss recording issues, at some point...

I like your song, including the vocals. Though I was hoping for a bit more movement/variation. It kind of throws its sounds/arrangements all at once in the first few bars, and then it's kind of a repetition from there. Like a woman who knows what she's doing, it's the kind of song that would be best if it revealed its secrets a bit more slowly, one by one if you know what I mean. And then it could go back to just vocals and pad, or piano and pad... to add more dynamics to the song.

Also, I think the pads are a bit all over the place sonically and the drums lack a bit of depth... but don't get me wrong, I like the song a lot, it really has a Marillion kind of vibe...

No, you don't have to install anything. Just go to the media section of the site.

                        Or, here's a linky.

Its taking a while to get more together since the guy we record with is on tour.

Thanks to you and EP for the constructive criticism. I took your advice to heart and stripped out a number of elements and just slowly bring them in through the course of the song. I also surgically EQed a lot of bass out of the vocals, as well as many more tweaks.

                            Here's the current state:

                            http://carbon111.com/music/breathing_machinery.mp3

And, as a side note, because they had to be imported into the new DAW, I had to (again!) remix Luna and Subterranean Bathers from scratch. This time I put less FX on the vocals and brought them up a bit as people were saying they were still too low:

                            http://www.carbon111.com/music/subterranean_bathers.mp3

No Time and The Face of Strangeness will get the same attention soon.

This new album has turned into a lot of work...especially since switching DAWs in the middle of the project. I'll post soon about the insanity of setting up the new DAW and the consequences of my "going native" in the near future...Herculean feats indeed...or maybe just boneheaded.

It reminded me of something , I just couldn't quite place it. A little Spocks Beard maybe ?

Nonetheless, way cool. I know nothing about production, so I can't comment on that. I just know I likee.....

                              • Carbon, I thought that was a very good improvement on an already good song I'm still not crazy about how the drums and pads seem to overlap each other sonically, but I'm liking this a lot.
