I never was much on the British Invasion or the Beach Boys.

 

Bob Crew OTOH, was one Hell of a good producer. Cole Porter was one Hell of a good songwriter.

And this is a perfect production AFAIC. Same year as 'Pet Sounds'. And these guys weren't using

the Wrecking Crew in LA. I don't know who Bob Crew's session players were. But wow - this is a

great record.

 

Bob Crew took two notes and three beats. Then he built the whole orchestration around those two notes and three beats. The back-up vocals on those three beats "never win...never win..." really tug at my old heartstrings. The bells chiming on them make it even more touching.The crescendo/turnaround at the bridge just before those beats, is dramatic and powerful. .

 

Frankie Valli thought this was the most sophisticated record they ever made.

I think it's one of the best Pop orchestrations by anyone - anywhere.

Yeah, they were both session musicians at one point in their careers.
