Members DarkCide
I've always wanted to have my own record company or my own distribution. I'm looking for good books that deal with the topic and gives good information. Which would you recommend
Members grachuss
First go on to limewire or another P2P program, and get a program called "business plan pro 2005". Download the sample plans and pick the one for the music-recording-distribution label. As far as books go I recommend. Graphic skills? Web Skills?Recording Studio?Video equipment and studio?Distribution contacts?Venue, places to play contacts? Money to fund any of the above you can;t provide. etc.
Members Ovation
You might want to start a record company based on your own creative ideas instead of using what you read in books to be like every other (failing?) record company out there. The CD/record business is sliding due to online music sources. Be creative and do things not already being done, offer unique services. Of course remember that starting any business is like starting a Kool-Aid stand - know the basics of business because you've got to make money at some point. Members HighKing
Honestly...as someone who used to run a record label, my suggestion is to avoid it. If there is anything else you can do in life and be happy and well off, do that instead. Or get signed to a label. Running a label is very hard, very time-consuming, and, in the end, not really worth it. And I actually did quite well. Just my 2 cents.
Members BandProfit
DarkCide, I would have to concure with most posts thus far. Running a label is a difficult path, I have the scars to prove it. But if you are going to do it I suggust you follow the old marketing addage, "differentiate or die." Basically ask yourself, "what am I going to do differently that will be so compelling as to attact customers, money and talent in ways that no one else is doing right now. If you are not going to put in the "brain time" to do this, then you need to look at your efforts and the money you will lose as your tuition in the school of life, because success will be very unlikely. That said, dont let anyone stiffle your ambition. - Sean
