A few weeks ago I went to GC to buy a new dj mixer. It retails for about $300. The mixer had a sign on it stating it was selling for $250. I went to buy it and the sales guy goes ... Oh, that will be $350....wtf. He goes, "that sign is a mistake, I cannot sell it to you at that price". The old bait and switch routine. I got the guy to give it to me for $275, so all came out o.k., but dang that put a sour taste in my mouth.

In the UK that kind of mistake is tough {censored} for the dealer.

I laughed and asked the guy if it was a joke. He replied, with all seriousness, "No, that's what they're going for these days."

Yeah..when I was at Guitar Center on Thursday they had a used Virus KB for $1700! :D

Same here. The dealer gotsta sell it for what it says on the tag.

It is the same here. GC would have to sell it at the advertised/tagged price.

The thing is...

I'm lucky to have a GC rep who takes care of me. I see his unit price on the monitor, he adds a leeeelte bit, and sells it to me werry werry weeeeasonable like.

That unit price is GC's actual cost from the manufacturer, plus shipping to their warehouse, plus shipping to the store, plus an "operating charge", which can be anywhere from 15 to 30% or more. It's absolutely, positively not anywhere close to what GC actually pays for the product.

I know because my store used to routinely mark certain products lower than GC's alleged dealer cost.

At the end of the day, GC is always making a decent (if not hefty) profit on you, even if their own salespeople don't know it.

If a place wont sell it to you for the priced marked or lower, walk away & buy elsewhere. Me I'd walk away & probably phone the mfg and inform the that this store was trying to sell their products for higher then the price stated on the sign. That often can result in the mfg pulling their products from the store.

I once went to a stereo store whose salesmen where asking more then mfg srp for Denons componants. Even showed saleman print out of Denon website mslp. They claimed prices just went up! Politely notified Denon & asked them to reccomend another auth dealer in my area, they jumped the offending store big time. And the salemen where fired on the spot. It was either that or lose their dealership.

Anytime your paying more then the price on sign your purposely letting yourself get screwed imo. Anytime your willing to pay more then mfg slp your a fool imo. Its not uncommon for mfg to pull their products from disreputable dealers stores.

Back when they first came out the second time (oh, early 1990s or so), I saw a new Korg CX-3 with a price tag of $1,000. I knew it was more than that. Not wanting to say anything and bring the boulder of Karma (no pun intended) crashing down on my head, I sneaked out without looking like I was going to buy anything and went home to ask my wife if we had the money. We didn't, but just as well. They had the price tag fixed the next day.

I was looking at the name of your subject in your topic and thought something else like this would be better:
