Members Diametro
I need a small-to-smallish practice amp that runs on batteries ... to jam with in the vehicle, hotel room or wherever ... Is it going to be that Roland Cube ... it's the right size for sure ... Or are there other choices ... ??? Price is not important ... but size and sound are ... Gus Lozada
Why not just a good set of headphones? Or you mean to jam with the others in the band?
Members The Pro
It's just an idea... you know those things that transmit from an iPod to an FM radio? They sell commonly at Walmarts and Radio Shacks and they work with keyboards. I used one once to transmit into the house sound system at a solo gig I played. They can turn any decent FM radio into a practice amp.
Members GigMan
Why not just a good set of headphones? Or you mean to jam with the others in the band? Yah, I'm w/Gus - headphones are a much better way to go if you're talking about playing by yourself... and if you're talking about jamming w/other people, why would you be doing that in your car? Members Diametro
I do have a good set of headphones (and they're with me on tour, of course) ... but I've always disliked playing through them for a host of reasons ... The reason I want a practice amp -- even for the tour vehicle -- is that I'm trying to learn an intricate medley of songs for which I only had a few days to prepare for -- not to mention everything else you have to do the last couple of days ... The guitarist is a better musician than I and he could help with the learning process and bounce ideas off him right away if he could hear it in the front seat ... (Though the radio transmitter idea is a good one, too ... ) ALSO ... we're a fairly spontaneously musical group, and the guitarist (acoustic) likes to jam out all the time ... How can I participate on keys if all I have is a set of headphones ... ??? Plus, I really love the sound of synths and acoustic guitar ... and so does the guitarist ... which is a bit surprising considering his Nashville background ...(that's where he's from though there's an effort to get him to move to Beau Fleuve to be with the singer-songwriter-producer/frontperson and I to really start this band and do COLLABORATIVE WORKS ... ) It realy seems like it's going to be the Cube anyway ... Gus Lozada
It realy seems like it's going to be the Cube anyway ... After knowing your needs and by browsing the available options, I guess that's the way to go. Make sure you buy an adaptor for the car's DC outlet. Members xmlguy
I've tried a lot of the battery powered amps and I'm not very pleased with any of them for bass performance. That's why I rolled my own mobile PA. For just being able to jam (without bass), I like the Roland Mobile Cube. It is reasonably loud, it's stereo, runs for a long time on AA NiMH batteries, has a lot of inputs, and has some decent FX built-in. I have an FM transmitter too, but a powerful radio station nearby can ruin your day when it unexpectedly breaks into the middle of your jam. These FM xmitters have very, very low power output. Although you can usually change the frequency, there might not be any free space in the band available for a clear signal.
Members Diametro
Yeah ... Low end is not a concern ... It's just for practice/jamming w/acoustic guitar ... Thanks for the go-ahead, XLM ... .... Good idea about the car adaptor, G.
