Members kazper
You may have to replace the capsule, but I would open it up carefully and look for obvious defects. Depending on the situation, it may be worth it to have someone look at the capsule if it looks like it has wrinkles or is split/tore. Take a look at the following page: http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com/capsndiaph.html
Members nerol1st
You lucky bastard. But I personally wouldn't DIY a Nueman it's so worth having a pro restore it for you epecially if you got it for 5 bucks (as long as it isn't burned out or something {censored}ty. Members kazper
if it's broke it can be fixed, worst case it needs a capsule.

Members daddysguitar
Right. But the first rule of DIY is to know when not to DIY. It was a joke. I've been employed as an electronic tech in audio for too many years in my life to remember, and have "re-repaired" many DIY repairs.

I've been employed as an electronic tech in audio for too many years in my life to remember, and have "re-repaired" many DIY repairs. Thought so but didn't want some others not to. I can't say how many home fixes I have repaired and I am not pro at it. Gads, I don't know if there is a bar set up somewhere with soldering stations and 2 for 1 drink specials, but I think there is and some of these were end of the night creations... Actually, I figured if he "took it to a professional," depending on who it was, they've probably never cleaned the capsule on a U-87. He did find some tremendous information on how some other folks "did it themselves," and it looked pretty simple to me. An interesting set of links, for sure. I understand how you've seen where people use their "slobbering iron" to "fix" something, but I hope that hellwood gets back to us here with his results! Moderators isaac42 Posted April 23, 2007 Moderators Share Posted April 23, 2007 Why wouldn't you get it professionally fixed up? Because it's only a $5 microphone!
Members Sir H C
He got it for $5, but U87s are worth a ton more. If you want to practice DIY, sell that sucker and buy a ton of DIY hackable mics. http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-70s-Neumann-U87-with-SHOCKMOUNT-VERY-RARE_W0QQitemZ150115647126QQihZ005QQcategoryZ41466QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/NEUMANN-U87Ai-MIC-IN-BOX-FULL-USA-WARRANTY-AUTH-DLR-U87_W0QQitemZ250107644326QQihZ015QQcategoryZ41466QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
