Next interface question :-)

Recommended Posts

A continuation of my last thread : http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?t=2199047

I was asking about this:

spacer.gifTascam US1641 USB Audio Interface

http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-MII-FTULTRA8R-LIST

And then I ran across this, which I think will work with the Protools already installed on the computer in question (and still fit in my budget).

M Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R USB Audio Interface

http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-TAS-US1641-LIST

What do you guys think?

In your other thread, you talk about something to fill the gap until you find something more substantial.

Why don't you save for something more substantial, which could save you hundreds of dollars from buying something to "fill the gap"?

If you feel that you should "fill the gap", then I would think that M-Audio (or Tascam, for that matter) would do so admirably, as both make budget gear that works well. Make sure that it works well with your recording program, which is apparently Pro Tools, and see what kind of support is offered from either where you buy it from or from the manufacturer (DUC, Tascam, M-Audio, Sweetwater Forums if you buy it from them, for example). Look for complaints on thos forums or wherever, things that keep coming up over and over again or things of that nature.

Thanks!

If and when I move up the surplus gear will probably make its way home for me to use there, and even now I can add value to some of our performing classes if I could record arrangements and performances on the fly and email or burn CDs for the students to work from.

I bought the Mbox for other stuff and then discovered that the chipset in my Dell was one of the 3 that wasn't compatible with the interface (), so that gave me the excuse I was looking for to buy a mac for my own use but I moved my old computer to the room in question. Then I got the bright idea that a cheap 8 input interface (thats actually compatible) would alllow me tr record classes and occasionally track drums to be dumped into the protools in my office. And possibly get us on the road to the other classes and whatnot. :)

Got it. I figured you had a reason, but I've seen a couple of people purchase something, only to go and purchase something better six months later and render their first purchase useless.

One of my friends did this, and sold his 42" LCD flat-screen to me for $500 when he purchased a larger flat-screen six months later, so at least somebody lucked out! :D

I'm actually guilty of that myself :o

This is a rare instance of me thinking things through a little better :)

Get an interface from m-Audio and get a license for Pro Tools m-Powered.

I have the M-powered Protools from my Mbox on that computer but I also installed it on my iMac. Will they make me pay for another license? I am seriously veering towards the M audio ultra 8 interface at this point.

On my forum Prages brought up that he's read that firewire might have slower data flow but that it handles it more efficiently...

I'm starting to get confused :)

No, you have Pro Tools LE on your Mac/PC with the MBox. Yes, Digi will make you pay for another license, the software on the PC will only work if an Mbox is connected and the right iLok license key is present.

USB 2.0 is as fast/good as Firewire - M-Audio also sells interfaces in PCI card format (must open the cover of the PC to install).

Actually mine is the Mbox mini...no iLok. I wouldn't be surprised if I needed to buy the license, though...
