Issues While Drumming

What's your biggest non-drumming problem when (you guessed it) playing the drums?

For me, it would be the need to flatuate. For some reason, I'm more susceptible to the releasing of intestinal gases when I'm behind the kit. It might be the "throne," I don't know.

Well, you guys?

Heh heh... I love farting when playing. I jump up a lot when I'm behind the kit, and it makes a prime time to let one go, much to the dismay of my band mates.

However, I get lost in the music a little too much on occasion. We strive to be a visual band so people get a real rock concert, and every once in awhile I find myself staring at something and focusing. Whoopsy!

I played a place one time where there was a TV in my line of sight and a playoff baseball game on TV. I had minor concentration issues that time.

I have no flatulence issues. I let 'em go whenever I need to and am very proud of my ass gas.

The only other problem I'll occasionally have is when I'm playing a slow and quiet groove. Sometimes I'll start sitting back and playing so mellowly that I'll actually loosen my grip to the point where the stick will just fall out of my hand. It's not like your typical stick drop where you hit something unexpectedly or your hands are sweaty and the stick is knocked loose....this is just a matter of OVER relaxing.

Yeaup, those slow, mellow grooves will get 'cha.

I, too, find myself getting lost in space with random... thoughts: "What's for dinner..." Oops, I'm losing time. "When did that scratch get on my bass drum?" Ah, there goes that fill.

Also, I've learned not to consume dairy products before drumming. :thu:

My biggest problem is head sweat. I'll be in the middle of a song and stinging sweat will sometimes pour into my eyes. I'll close my eyes and people think that I am really getting into, but in fact I am just trying to keep my eyeballs from being assaulted.

I sweat a lot when I play. I can make ink blots on a gray shirt in about an hour of hard drumming. My old thrash band once jammed in my basement in the summer (was about 95 degrees indoors, more outdoors) for 5.5 hours straight. I think I drank about a gallon and a half of water. I was actually dripping on the floor, with not a dry spot on any of my clothing. I was about ready to pass out, too.

Well, that's nice of you to share....:D

One of the issues that comes to mind is that when I'm playing with my hair down, it sometimes get's tangled up with my drumsticks (my hair is very long, it goes below my bottom), so I've solved that with the obvious: tie my hair in a ponytail. The other issue I sometimes have is that I tend to sneeze a lot when I'm in a smoking-allowed enviroment...so sometimes I miss a beat there, but I've managed (since it happens A LOT) to disguise it by improvising

The problem with the ponytail is that you can't do the Chuck Biscuits thing. He's pretty much the reason why i'm growing my hair out.

Yeah, I usually wear a wife beater when I play and by time I'm done "The Alien" has appeared on my torso. I get a nice couple sweat spots under my titties, a line down the center and a pool of sweat on my belly (and the top of jeans.) Sometimes the front of my boxer briefs get soaked too and it drives me nuts. I have to change em when we take a break or something (thankfully, we practice at my house). As a result of my drippiness, I usually bring spare shirts to gigs. They're almost as important as spare heads and sticks!

Since I like to drink beer and/or carbonated water while playing, I'll often need to let out a belch. Problem is I have a mic in my face. Since it's practice, sometimes I'll just let it rip into the mic for the dudes to hear, but I'm really working on turning my head away so I don't get in a habit of doing that at shows. :o

Semi-drumming related is simply the act of singing and drumming at the same time. I can have a song completely down drumwise, but once I add vocals, it's like I'm playing with wiffle bats. I eventually get it and do sing harmonies and some lead on at least half our songs, but sometimes it just takes way too much effort and concentration. :o
