Members mrnwhite
Anyone have suggestions on kits for not so tall drummers? I just got back into playing and looking to buy a new set. I had a Tama Rockstar kit when I was younger and it felt too big for me. Sad thing is I haven't grown since then! I'm about 4' 11"... but I'm a girl so I can get away with it I think sets with 18" or 20" bass drums would work but kits that's very adjustable would be good too. I'm willing to spend about $700. Members cearleywine
Gretsch Catalina Jazz kit. 18" bass, 12" and 14" toms, 14" snare. I own the previous model and absolutely love it. Musicians friend has it for $599. Explorers has it for $507. www.explorersdrums.com

Members polarnewfie
why dont you look at some of the ddrum sets too. They have 20x20 kick drums, and short stack toms. I played a friends set and he set it real low, I felt like I towered over the set. I am 5'9". So at least if you look at the sets, you can get an idea of the type of set you can look for. They have decent sets for good prices. Just another option. Exhaust all your options before you make a decision. Check for short stack drums in regular sizes such as 10x6, 12x6 etc. some companies do make them, like tama and others.
Members 1001gear
The 18 and 20 inch bass drums are a must. You can also use a full complement of toms if you position them in reverse order with only the shortest toms directly over the bass drum.
Members twosticks
Yamaha Rydeens I think is a 20" bass and sound very nice. New five pieces are like $500! Leaves you a little left over for cymbals. Hope this helps!

How 'bout these babies! Just kidding..really. It's nice to see a young lady posting on this forum! Check out the TAMA Imperialstar kit with the 18" kick. It comes with decent hardware and Meinl HCS cymbals for like $500! -HB

Members marko46
All good suggestions, I got nothin' to add except Hi and Welcome to the Zoo. (She said she was a chick, where's you guy's manners?) Oh, this is the Drum Forum, that's right.
Members mrnwhite
Wow! You guys are awesome!! Thanks for all the suggestions. The Catalina's definitely been on my list but I haven't checked local drum shops to see them first hand. I'm assuming if I wanted to expand it to 5pc I could just do a tom mount to the cymbal or add another floor tom. Who knew there'd be a bunch of comedians in this forum When I saw the Coda drums I thought...I'm short but I'm not 5 years old! I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks for welcoming me to the forum. I'm glad I joined.

Members pasta
You could get a regular Taye 18" or 20" kick and outfit it with Gokit toms which are 8, 10 and 12. Take a look at what this guy did with a Taye and a Taye GoKit in the same wrap. http://entertainment.webshots.com/album/531433767FOFQfe http://www.drumforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=4363

Members mrnwhite
Nice...definitely a cool idea. I've heard great things about the Gokit and upwards but not much about the RockPro or Spotlight. That's about the price range I'm working with. Any insight on those Taye kits or even the Sonor Force line? I've heard the Sonor's are pretty adjustable.

Members D Carroll
taye makes great products. i have played the prox, and it is a great kit, so i assume that the rock pro is good as well, the only difference i can see is the finish... check them out: http://www.massmusic.net/shop/?shop=1&cat=1260&cart=7535283

Members billvinett
I really, really like the Yamaha Manu Katche Junior Kit. It's the kit I practice and gig with. 16 x 16 Bass, 13 x 13 Floor, 10 x 7 High Tom; 12 x 5 Snare. I chose to use a full size '65 Supraohonic snare, but the hardware is good, the drums tune very well and the bass drum is a joy. I'm 5'10" and I like to sit a little high, but these can be set up to fit any height drummer. The key is the fully adjustable riser post and legs on the 16" bass drum and the shallow high tom depth. Just very adjustable in height and they sound good mic'ed, too. These are made of Luan Mahogany (Phillipines). It's not just me loving my own drums, either. I've heard other kits played at clubs and they sound great, too. I got some Nomad cases (best investment ever) and the whole shooting match fits in the back of a Focus Wagon without having to fold the seats down. A May internal mic setup works like a charm in the bass drum. I've had mine for about five years and it's love. Some of the newer kits come with a finish instead of a wrap and a 1" deeper Floor Tom. Members pasta
I have the Taye GoKit and it's super adjustable--the small sizes notwithstanding, the hardware makes things easy to put where you want. Of course the small toms just magnify that! It also sounds really good. I still have stock heads on the toms and put an Aquarian on the kick. Members mrnwhite
Hey guys....I'm going with the Catalina! Everyone's suggestions were great and inline with what I was considering prior to joining the forum. I found an ebay store selling the kit with hardware (probably not high quality stuff, but I'll come back to that) with their own exclusive Delmar Red Finish. This may sound like a stupid question but how does that work? I don't know much about custom wraps. But back to the hardware. I'm thinking the hardware is enough to get me started back into playing. As I'm trying to get the ol' chops back, I can take the time to find hardware and cymbals that I'll really like. Otherwise I'll drive myself batty trying to find things quickly because I want to play a set now! Here's the link to their store:http://cgi.ebay.com/GRETSCH-CATALINA-CLUB-JAZZ-4-PIECE-DRUM-SET-W-HARDWARE_W0QQitemZ120206172347QQihZ002QQcategoryZ64439QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem By the way, there's a video of a sales person and a session drummer playing. It's kind of silly but you get to hear one of the sets being played.
Members MOakley
DDrum Dominion Pocket kit. Choose your poison: Ash or Maple. The finishes are the best unless you get one of the burst(I have a blue/tealish burst Dominion snare that is beautiful). 20x20 cannon of a bass and short stack toms. The 7x13 snare seriously pops. Great value and can cover a wide range of music. Just replace ALL the heads....the stock heads are horrible. I play one of these a couple times a week at a piano bar and it is one helluva kit.
