Does this still sound like chest voice?

That's a very nice A#. I think that sounds like what some people call "head in full voice". To me it sounds like its higher in your head, as opposed to chesty/belty, but still full voice sounding.

Sounds good man! :thu:

One of goals this year is to stop belting as much...so I'm trying new things with old songs. I've worn this song out to death, but it's a good example, lol. I usually belt the top note as opposed to what I'm doing here. My question is does it still sound chesty? It's Alice in Chains...go figure

Agree with davie.

Sounds like you're straining juuuuuuuuuuuuuust slightly though. When you're in your head voice, don't be afraid to use your nose.

Well bro, distortion and grit and {censored} makes it more chesty, so if you were holding back on the grit in this clip, you're good.

Why don't you post a clip of when you belt so we can compare?

One thing though - when you descend the scale on the words 'jesus christ', the middle note right before you land in chest is noticeably (spelling?) weaker than you seem to want it to be. Are my ears playing tricks?

Bah...I need to make it more belty then...without actually belting it, lol.

@triq - there's no strain there, I'm just used to "distorting" that note. I was trying to hold back on this snippet...I usually distort it a LOT more than that, haha.

I see, I see. Is it mic proximity, perhaps?

If you want, you can upload that vocal sample to Ken Tamplin's website.

He gives a free vocal analysis.

http://kentamplinvocalacademy.com/2012/01/upload-your-vocal-sample/

Maybe he can give some free tips about your chest voice singing.

Below are some Youtube videos he has with a few students.

In the 3rd and 5th video, he's singing some Whitney Houston.... :-)

In the 4th one, he's singing Adele, but changes the song because

of Adele's bad technique that eventually popped a blood vessel in her throat....

His Skype lessons are WAY too expensive for me, but his DVDs are more

manageable.

He does come across as genuine and seems to know his stuff.

Lol - statutory rape?

That aside, great vocal sample staticsound. You're getting progressively stronger over the past year or so since I've heard you. Time to get more into the teaching - we need some young blood - that tamblin guy's old and he dyes his hair...lol...

Cool man, thanks! I need to make time and do some more YouTube vids, and try to build up a small clientele...

This is what I got back from Tamplin...If I'm reading it right, he thinks I'm in chest voice?...if this is so, than I think I can pull this song of "cheating" in head voice/mix, whatever you want to call it?..lol Anyway, here's the email I got :

Hi Derek,

Thanks for your submission.

You are actually doing a decent job hanging on the the Bb.

Before you pull chest up that high you need to build the upper mid voice. (as hig as possible).

This note sounds like it is at the top of your chest range (even if it isn't it sounds like it is).

In my How To Sing Better Tham Anyone Else course, I develop this upper mid voice first.

Then you can decide you far down you want to bring head and mix the sound.

This is how a Cornell / Staley sound is achieved.

I hope that helps.

He sounds a bit absent-minded in that email. He does seem to mistake your hedsetto for pulled chest sometimes, but then sometimes not?

No idea, bruh.

Where's that chest-pull clip you promised us? ;-)

Also, I wouldn't mind being one of your first clients, but it seems the problem I have with resonance/twang/placement comes very naturally to you, so I'm wondering if you'd be the best choice of teacher for me specifically.

Yeah, that e-mail was a bit confusing. His stuff is waaaay to expensive for me at the moment anyways. Yeah dude, if you wanna "twang" I'm sure I could show you.

Here's another clip, pulling a bit of chest and with grit and distortion added in. Which one sounds better...the original clip or this one?

I have these moments when I'm recording when I wish I could combine two takes (my editing/mixing skills aren't nearly that advanced) because there are great aspects from both that I'd like to keep without doing the whole thing over again. That's how I feel with these two clips. I like the grit. It does add a new dimension to the vocal (I'd be very careful with adding grit that doesn't come naturally though). But I agree with Masklin when he says that you lose a bit of the power and fullness that you had in the first clip.

Yeah, the grit thing took me awhile to do properly. I can actually do that all night and be fine...it's fake, lol. It's just vocal fry added in to the actual note. But you do compromise a little fullness when you add the false folds in there...in my case anyway :p

PS - When I get off work tonight, I'm gonna try to make a quick resonance vid Masklin

Will there always be a loss of fullness as you add grit in chest, or is this something that can be improved upon through refining technique? Though if you can do this all night and feel good, I can't imagine there's much you can change without risking damage. :idk:

I'm looking forward to the video! Maybe it will prove to be a milestone in my soon-to-be-career :thu:.
