Modded Guitar Thread - What did you do? How did it turn out?

Hey, I have an x-bridge. Did you do the on-board preamp? I didn't. It sounds like total {censored} without one. I have a fishman platinum stompbox preamp that makes it sound like an acoustic. But you really have to have a separate signal to route to a keyboard amp or into the PA for it to sound like an acoustic. Through my amp, it sounds like dookie. I do play solo acoustic gigs with it, though. through the preamp and direct into the PA, it sounds just like an ovation (which doesn't sound much like an acoustic, but close enough).

No on-board preamp, and yes it often sounds like ass without it. But ,that's just one of the reasons that I've torn this guitar back apart. I think I'm going to wire it with a P90 in the neck, humbucker in the bridge, & add a stereo jack so that I can run the X-bridge to a separate preamp/ dedicated amp.

Is that onboard preamp decent? I know that having it close to the piezos gives it an advantage.

Looking at all these beautiful mod jobs makes me feel like a rank amateur in the modding department -- but then I AM a rank amateur in the modding department.

I am a pro player though ;)

Actually, I'd like to strip the black off the LTD and re-finish it in magenta or some other loud color. I wear black on stage and I like the guitar to show up. Since I play sax, wind synth, flute, guitar and keys on stage, I often get the "How many instruments do you play?" comment. It is show-biz, and if someone talks about us because of the cat on the guitar, or how many instruments I play on stage, that is a good thing.

As much as I'd like it to be magenta, I don't have the time, tools or experience to do that, so black it stays. When the cat decal wears off, I'll put something else on it (thinking about cat paw prints).

I changed the knobs and pickguard of my Casino, but I don't know if that qualifies as a real mod:

I think it looks better "Gibsonized"

I love it. The Mean 90 growls like a bridge pickup should, and the Dream 90 is deep and clear like a neck pickups should be. They're well balanced too. I had a Dream 90 in the bridge for a short while and no matter how I adjusted it, it sounded a little thin. The Mean 90 definitely has a bigger, thicker sound.

My finding exactly on the Dream 90 in the bridge. I'll have to get a Dream/Mean combo now, there's just no way around it!

These both sound great and play like the proverbial butter. I play at home and these suit me just fine- besides modding is fun and the entertainment value in doing the work is also worth something in my eyes. Still, I wouldn't hesitate for one minute to gig with these guitars.
