Basically sustain isn't a function of the pickup per se - it's the interaction between pickups, the wood of the guitar, the setup and not least the amp and the loudness thereof

many thanks - my axe is naturally sustainy due to its solid construction and semi design: am just greedy for squeezing as much as i can out of each note. what edge would a matched pair of Burstbuckers have over my Alnico's [Alnico II's?] - like the classic Brit Blues sound so anything steering towards that direction would be cool

Any humbucker thats not red hot and isnt too close to the strings..as the string pull kills the sustain as it stops the strings vibrating!
