Members Joe Vocht
Get a used Ibanez AS120 and you'll never look back!!
Members Vintage55
If you're going over the $1000 mark, I would go with an Eastman without even thinking about anything else.
Members Elias Graves
Eastman is probably too high to fit there. See if you can find a Hofner CT series. The Verythin model is the one you want to find. The Epi, Hagstrom and others are also good choices. Try some out to see which one fits best. Members Martin Player
Another vote for an older MIK Ibanez Artstar series. These came with the Super 58 pickups, which are very nice. Also, fit and finish is good. Nice guitar for the money.

I think a shop back home in Leeds had a few in stock. Should have tried one out but wasn't interested in semis at the time.
Members Kaz2550
Are MIK Tokais generally better than Epis?
Members Joe Vocht
They are usually in the 350 to 550 US dollar price range depending on condition...but they sure gave Gibson headaches...yes used because they don't make them anymore...those '58 pups can do allmost any sound too! Members Joe Vocht
Tokais are very good, but an Epi elitist like my byrdland is the cream of the crop as far as I'm concerned.

Members Kaz2550
I vote Hagstrom... I tried the Tremar version the other day. Didn't plug it in but it felt really nice. Pretty well built and the trem stayed in tune well. The inlays let it down big slabs of ugly white MOTS but it wouldn't be so bad if they were dots. Shame they don't do it in cherry red. Biggest let down was the price,
Members thegamestop
They are a little bit more pricey, but nothing really needs to be upgraded. The pickups are some of the best stock pickups I have ever heard, stays in tune well, really good construction. I tried the Tremar version the other day. Didn't plug it in but it felt really nice. Members PunkKitty
Take your pick of the Ibanez Artcores. Great guitars.
Members steve_man
Epi Dot Deluxe or Sheraton...or a Hagstrom Viking. Both amazing guitars, IMO.
Members nuke_diver
I like this one but I don't know if you can get them where you are. Looks a bit different too

Members AnneP
I chose a Cherry Sunburst Hagstrom Viking Deluxe. I was torn between the Epiphone Casino and the Hagstrom, but the Zappa connection (see their website) closed it. Plus the neck works better for me. It sounds great and looks great (Jimmy D'Aquisto design).

Members Citizen_Insane
I just got a Sheraton II for $300USD. Really nice guitar, made in Korea, but the pups could use an upgrade. If you're spending as much as you are, you might be able to find an elitest Epi or an Eastman for your price, they're both really nice quality guitars. Members SnoMan97
If you can't afford the Ibanez AS120, try to find an AS80. Still has the Super 58's pickups. Awesome guitar.

Members NashSG
I really like my Hamer Echotone. It is an older one as it sat in a store unsold for about 10 years. To get it right, I ended up putting a new nut on it and putting in some good pots and caps. At least with this one, the Duncan Designed pickups are pretty good, kind of PAF in out put. It's got a binding on the neck and in the f-holes, so looks pretty good. I knew there was one in the local store for a long time but Will Ray talked about getting one in his column on ebay guitar finds in a guitar magazine, so I checked it out.
