Members Quarter
Lots of good advice, I'd just reinforce a couple things.A good soldering station with appropriately sized tips is a joy to use. Yes, you can make do with lesser gear, but if you can, definitely opt for the better tool.Tips and tip size ... a bigger tip has more mass ... more mass has more stored heat. Combined with the larger surface area, a larger tip will heat a part quicker than a smaller tip. Pre tin everything, it makes life much easyer.Keep your tips cleaned and tinned and they will last for years. I'm still using the original tips I bought for my Hakko 936 station 12 years ago.Eye protection is never a bad idea. Soldering in a well ventilated area is also recommended. I don't wear gloves, but if you wanted, they make some very thin white cotton gloves for cheap that still allow for a degree of dexterity.A couple other essentials for me are good lighting, a magnifying visor, and a cheap "helping hands" tool. You can find them all over for less than $5..
Members RickBeall
I wear an old diving suit when I solder and it works out well for me. Just kidding. Of course go for it. I learned some great tips reading all the tips everyone gave you!
