Metallica is another old band I like....however I prefer their first 4 albums to the later stuff. And Justice For All is my favorite album from them. From the Black Album onwards they changed. But I am happy that on there new album that came out in 2008 they made an attempt to return to there speed metal ways. It's a step in the right direction but they are not completely there yet. Do you think they can ever get back to their badness of And Justice For All?

They already did.

Death Magnetic is as good as Justice was.

Haters gonna hate, as they say, and Metallica really set themselves up to be hated over the years. But Death Magnetic is an excellent album, the album that should have come after Justice.

But honestly, we musicians always say we love artists who do what they feel, what moves them.....but the second a Metallica plays some lighter stuff based off their other influences, it's all hate, all the time.

Lol, indeed.

Like I said: Haters gonna hate.:poke:

IMO alot of the folks who go strait to "hate it, sucks" about Death Magnetic either never actually listened to Metallica back in the day (but say thay did, cause liking the first 4 albums is still "cool") or never actually listened to Death Magnetic.

There is no question it's on par with their late pre-Black Album work. Erase all the Black Album Era new casual fans, napster hatred and their own whining self-indulgent rock-star bit over the last decade, and simply insert D.M. as the release after Justice, and EVERY Metallica Fan loves it. Of that, my friend, I have no doubt whatsoever.

To each their own of course. If this were a talk on Country Music, I'd be the hater, so I suppose I can't really talk. Closed minds are closed, and as I said, Metallica brought all of that hate on themselves with their silly antics.

DM was one of the best albums in a long time. I agree about early production. Thin on very early stuff, muddy on some of the later stuff. St. Anger might have been ok production wise if not for that stupid snare. I'm curious to see what they do next.

Metallica has put themselves through the wringer of commercialism. Which is not something I hold against them. They're not 21 years old anymore, and they have babies to feed and put clothes on. The guys and the music are never going to be the same as 1986.

I thought the black album, load/reload were excellent albums... It's just not 'Metallica'. When I hear that name, my first thoughts are 'kill em' all', 'ride the lightning', puppets/justice.

A smarter move would have been to break up if they wanted to delve into another genre, But I'm no stranger to wishful thinking.

Time to forgive and forget.

Even if they did, they'd get {censored} for that too. I liked stuff from everything up to and including the black album. I thought Death Magnetic was a decent return to form without trying to completely rehash the past EXCEPT for Kirk's playing.

Unlike many I've never really had a problem with his playing, it's the metal guitar version of Ringo's drumming. People want to give him {censored} about what he plays and how he plays it, but when you were first hearing Metallica and listening to albums did you ever actually say to yourself, "gee, I'd really like of the guitarist were better"? I never did, just I never think these Beatles could have really had something if only they'd had a better drummer.

But his playing on DM was a disappointment, even bad. It's like whatever he had that I liked and still enjoy on the earlier albums is gone. I appreciate musical growth and evolution, it's practically inevitable, but it hasn't served Kirk well at all. As I understand he started taking lessons and college music classes, but his playing doesn't reflect any growth, more like deterioration. And no, I'm not going to record myself attempting to play any of his work, that's his job, not mine.:thu:

mmm, Its hard to say, especially as a Metallica fan, being my favorite band I like all there stuff. Of course in there newer album they use different elements then they had back in the day. And there older stuff was just a unbelievable, But over the years they slowed them selves down. There older stuff will always be the best.

Part of what made the early stuff so great was that youthful angst combined with a willingness to do something a little different. I've got nothing against them getting older and being financially stable. What have they got to be pissed off about now? There's a lot more integrity in writing meaningful music for whatever your station in life, than churning out angst-ridden tunes to please the base.

That said, I think DM is the best thrash album they've put out since Justice. I think Load's a hell of a rock n roll album too though if you take away all the "omg it's not teh thrazh sellout!!!" and let it stand on its own.

I think the only 'bad' album they put out has been St. Anger.

Even Load and Reload are good; great rock albums with the best tone and production Metallica has ever had. Are they thrash? No, but at that point Metallica had been Metallica for 20 years. Really, they have yet to put out and albums that really 'sound the same'. I would say the similarities between Ride and Master are the closest they came to a repeat, and they indended (Re)load to be a double album.

But from Kill 'em All > Ride/Puppets > Justice > Black > (Re)Load > St. Anger > DM.... each step is a different sounding at styled album.

They've become Dad Rock now. Hetfield's voice has lost it's grit and the lyrics are just getting stupid. "My lifestyle determines my deathstyle"? Really? Death Magnetic was a step in the right direction musically, but it sounded like a bunch of guys in their mid 40's who decided to put a metal band together, not nearly the band Metallica used to be.
