Members Phait
http://www.freemake.com/downloads/ Came across this today as I'm converting some WAVs to MP3. This company has freeware from audio conversion, video conversion, downloading YouTube videos or audio, etc. Quite nice! *EDIT* Although using Freemake Audio Converter it crashed after converting the second WAV, twice... your mileage may vary. Members philbo
I still stick with Exact Audio Copy using LAME for ripping CDs. For video I use VLC. I guess I'm stuck in my old fogey ways...
Members Phait
Free Rip did what I needed for audio conversion http://www.freerip.com/ But I've always used Any Video Converter (free) for video stuff http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/ I didn't know VLC can convert too? Members scarecrowbob
VLC's conversion method isn't super obvious, but it's what I use.

Members electrochrisso
I find VLC is great, the best thing is you can download the no installer version and be fully portable.
Members daklander
I now use Audacity. Import an audio file and export it to what ever format you want.
Members electrochrisso
Yes Audacity is good too, and there are a lot of audio formats supported for export, when plugins/packs are installed.
