Members bfloyd6969
Never tried them before. Can someone give me a basic description of how they compare to a full sized humbucker, perhaps P90? Does it fall in between these two? Perhaps more like a single coil sized, bladed humbucker? Just looking for a basic run down. Thanks.
Members sk8centilli
Bright and no hum. I think they are much closer to Fender than they are to full'buckers or P90's. After getting my Deluxe I sold my G&L's.
Members Deadbeat Son
In my opinion, they were bright and a bit thin. I didn't hesitate to yank them out of my Les Paul in favor of a set of P90s.
Members photon9
They are brighter. They kinda have their own sound. More like a single with no hum than a P90. IMO they are much less articulate than a single coil or a P90. This may be good or bad depending on the user. I have had two guitars with them. One I sold and the other I have seriously considered selling. They're not really my thing. YMMV.
Members bfloyd6969
Thanks for the info guys. So, nothing like a single coil sized bladed humbucker?
Members jgyn
I like mine ('69 Deluxe) way more than the P90s in my SG Classic.
Members Wyatt
Generally no to the blades. Most blades are hotter, tighter and more aggressive. But not all mini's are made the same. Some threads from the search function... http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?2797081-Mini-Humbuckers http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?2699080-Mini-Humbuckers-Who-Do-You-Luv-i.e.-for-after-market-upgrades http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?2661034-Mini-Hum-vs.-P90 http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?2093931-Mini-humbuckers.. http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?2050485-LP-with-mini-humbuckers... Etc. Personally, they are my A#1, but my tastes lean to single coils...Strat, Tele and the like, and I don't like full0szie humbuckers at all. Those who like full-size humbuckers usually don't like mini's.
Members bfloyd6969
Thanks for the info and links, guys. I'm more fond of single coils myself but really liked the sound of Joe Walsh's single pickup (what looked to be a mini humbucker) strat at one of the Crossroads Festivals - which has started my research for mini 'buckers. His sound surely did not sound like a full humbucker, but nothing I've really heard before. Of course alot of this has to do with his amps, effects, and his hands, but I wanted to try to get a basic idea of them before buying one and a new custom pickguard to go on a strat. Members Wyatt
I think I read that was a Seymour Duncan SM series. Looks like a Firebird, but made a little more like a Epiphone/Les Paul Deluxe mini. Before that he used to use a Glenn Frey signature model Rickenbacker for slide. Members Mahuska
I have two experiences with them. A SD mini-hum in a Tele I used to own. It was a neck pup so it didn't seem bright. Not very hot but I thought it sounded lovely. Second I have minis in my Gretsch Pro Jet. They were the opposite of bright, muddy actually. I sent them to Bryan at BG pup's for a rewind. Wow what a difference. A little more hotter and also articulate, still not bright though. With the right amp settings it sounds fabulous and have some some character. I must have some different experiences than what other's have shared
Members bfloyd6969
Thanks everyone. I had a listen to the Mini Humbuckers over at the Seymour Duncan site and the different models were are different ends of the frequency spectrum. The vintage model was clear, bright, and articulate while the custom and Seymourized versions were darker and tighter, less articulate when clean. I liked the vintage model
