Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted December 9, 2011 Moderators Share Posted December 9, 2011 Anybody owned both an R4 and R7 and is able to comment on whether they are identical neck wise or if the R7 is slightly slimmer, more towards the late 50s profile? Members Wyatt
Over the last 5 years or more there seems to have no longer been any trend or standardization for any one model. At one time, especially pre-VOS, you could count on the R7 and R8 to be the ones with the thickest, bulkiest necks. Now many, if not most, are thinner and closer to an R9; if I had to hazard a guess I would say Gibson moved away the more massive Historic necks to appeal to a wider audience. But I haven't tried enough for that to be any more than speculation. So, ultimately, the answer is ... you really have to try each guitar in person anymore. Obviously there are other major difference between the R4 and R7 that tend to weight in more when people lean toward one or the other.
Members mnewb1
I had a pre-VOS R7 and that neck was definitely a baseball bat. never played the R4 to compare though.
