Finally i came around recording some soundfiles, so if anyone is interested in those pickups listen here:

Any comments welcome!

here is the youtube description:

Pickup shoot-out, comparison. 3 guitars with 3 different pickups, all with a "gretschy" sound:

1. Gretsch Tennessee 2003 with Hi-LoTron pickups - Elixir 10 strings

2. Gretsch Tennessee 2002 (pre-Fender) with Filtertron pickups - D'Addario 11 strings

3. Hagstrom Viking Tremar Deluxe with GFS Retroton Nashville pickups - D'Addario 10 strings

All 3 recorded through Vox AC15 C1 amp, all soundexamples with the same settings EXCEPT the last one, on which I tried to match the sounds for all 3 guitars. Recorded with Rode NT2-A mic into Universal Audio LA-610 preamp. No effects added after the recording, no EQing, just the plain sound.

Nice comparison.  I liked the hi-los in the cleaner settings, the filtertrons on the OD...they just seemed to rock a bit more.  I thought the GFS sounded a little thinner on all the picking, but lost a bit of coherence when you were strumming.  They were in the same neighborhood, though.

They should've called 'em LoLos! I believe they're only around 3 ohms, and a smaller coil than a typical Teisco pup! They sound good, but about as strong as a mouse breathing on your foot! Had them in my '64 6117 Double Anniversary, but eventually both went out, so i put in Filter'Trons. -Adam
