Making sense of product lines

Pardon me while I vent... but without question, my biggest pet peeve with drum companies is trying to make sense of their product lines. Mapex is the worst. Here's an example.

Go to mapex.com, click on drums, click on Orion and it says:

"The day will come when you're ready for an Orion."

Really? Hmmm.... what the hell does that mean? When I'm 12? When I'm looking for an endorsement for my world tour?

Click on Pro M:

"You're serious about drums."

Why, yes... yes I am. That's why I'm on your website.

Click on Saturn:

"Hearing is believing."

Uh. Okay.

Other drum manufacturers have similar BS. Can't any company say...

X is our starter kit.

Y is our mid-level kit.

Z is our top of the line kit.

My head hurts.

Yeah, there is so much rhetoric and hype. Drum companies like to portray everything they make as the best on the market, and try to sell each product at it's own level. A lot of it is confusing, since I prefer the sound of the less expensive Mapex saturn to the orions.

The only thing you as a consumer can do is find a kit you like the looks of and try it.

Don't let the hype insult you, Mapex is a fine company, but like others, they have to hawk their wares and make an image that will appeal.
