Difference between split/offset lugs?

Just something I've been wondering about for a while.

 

Whats the difference between split/offset lugs and standard lugs?

 

Is it purely cosmetic, or does it influence tuning range, tuning precision, etc?

I can't imagine it's anything but cosmetic. My Gretsch has offset lugs and that's all I can figure. After all, the tension on one side of the drum really isn't affected by the tension on the other side in any noticeable amount to speak of, and if both sides of the drum have the same number of lugs, it should be miniscule if anything.

Essentially that's what I was thinking. But who knows, stranger things have happened.

Sometimes they won't fit on the drum too.
