Members deepflight
I've mentioned before that I am learning to play jug band music. I thought this video from 1931 of the Mound City Blue Blowers was pretty cool. The drummer is playing a suitcase, but not a "suitcase drum" of the sort that people are building today. He has it upended between his knees, and it looks like he is literally kicking the suitcase with his right foot while drumming with whisk brooms. It appears he's holding the brooms with a "traditional grip" -- not surprising on the one hand, but it wasn't what I was expecting given the unconventional nature of his instrument.http://youtu.be/39Najl0eSoc
Members deepflight
I forgot to mention: I have a question about this-- the drummer has something strapped over the top of the suitcase. Does anyone have any idea what's going on with it? What purpose does it serve? You may be able to see it better in this video: http://youtu.be/JfbW5jfgmog
Members 1001gear
In '31 any other grip would have been wrong. The thing draped on the box might be a towel or leather probably glued down. Just guessing it might be the same leatther as drumheads of the time.Oh and thanks. I borrowed the second video for another thread on who invented guitar tapping. @ 03:02 - looks the banjo guy takes the lead in that race.
