Members LoC
Okay, so I am not satisfied with other gauges of strings so I have decided to customize my own set. This is what I plan to get .120, .95, .75, .55 and .40.I should be a okay, right? Nothing is out of proportion? My only concern is the .75 A-string. would .80 be better for tuning without popping it? Members Thumper
I might be a bit concerned about having such a heavy bottom and skinny top---it could cause neck torsion. I'd look at the manufacurer's specs and see what gauges they recommend.
Members LoC
Hmm, I thought it would be fine because the B and E strings are much smaller, 125 t0 120 and 100-105 to 95.

Rotosound makes 120-95-75-60-40 set, the RS665LC Swing Bass. So does D'addario, the EPS220-5. Both stainless steel, though.
Members LoC
Would a .115 work for the low B-string?

Members bholder
Would a .115 work for the low B-string? Too thin and floppy for my tastes, but I tend towards heavier gauges anyway.
Members Hunter6
Would a .115 work for the low B-string? That wouldn't have much tension unless you have a super-long scale, I don't think. a .130 on a 34" scale feels really loose to me, as is. I can't imagine a .115. Members LoC
Ermm, heavier gauges lack color, in my opinion. Smaller gauges are significantly brighter and I haven't found them to be floppy and I have a heavy finger picking style. As well, lighter strings are far easier to fret. But will a .115 work or would a .120 be better?

Moderators Kindness Posted April 11, 2007 Moderators Share Posted April 11, 2007 I have seen a .115 work just fine. The best way to know is to try it yourself. You are going to get some people telling you that .130 is floppy and others telling you they have no problems detuning their 4-string set to BEAD tuning. I personally tend to like a B-string in the .120-.125 range, though it varies by manufacturer.
Moderators Kindness Posted April 11, 2007 Moderators Share Posted April 11, 2007 I have a 24 fret scale. What's a fret scale? I assume you mean you have a 24 fret neck. Your scale length is the measurement between the bridge saddles and the nut. The standard (long-scale) is 34".
