Members justinbass
I can't stand them. They look wrong to me, regardless of color. Why can't they have a one piece pickguard like this?
Moderators Kindness Posted October 15, 2007 Moderators Share Posted October 15, 2007 Jack plates are typically stronger than plastic pickguards and don't often crack. This is important since the electronics are mounted directly to the guard/plate. I personally prefer the look of a metal plate.
Members L-1329
I hate control plates. I hate top routed basses. A well crafted bass should NOT have metal plates and chunks of plastic screwed all over it. EVER. All that means to me is that the bass was hacked out of a factory in the cheapest and quickest way possible. Basses should be sleek, seamless and sexy. Not covered up in god awful plastic and metal plates.
Members justinbass
L-1329 I agree that most of the time re-routing looks better. But I submit this as evidence that pickguards can look sweet.
Members rummy
I like the jazz controls. The typical vol/vol/tone, and the vol/blend/tone.

But you are right, THAT particular piece of metal does look cool!

Why can't they have a one piece pickguard like this? That one-piece pg looks like a toy. Gimme a chrome cover or give me death! That's part of what makes a J a J. That's a pretty broad generalization. I'll agree that your preference aesthetically is for the rear routed basses, but there are plenty of finely crafted top routed basses as well. In fact, it is usually easier to rout a goofy looking swimming pool (control cavity) than it is to make a nice top routed bass.

If you can't pull that pickguard off and still have a bass looking well finished and complete, then it 'aint no bass I'd ever want.

Members __tony__renaud
They don't bug me. For practical use on the gig, I actually prefer a Jazz with no control plate, like the old-school Lull or Sadowsky J models.
Members Captain Fathead
I prefer the pick guards. I really dislike the back of the bass having a big ol' piece of plastic on it. If I could change one thing about my L2K, it would be front routed with a pick guard.

Members walkerci
Yup, they are fugly. I prefer no pickguard, but if there must be one then it should be one piece. The Jazz control plates look like an afterthought and disrupt the lines of the instrument. And yes, a diamond plate pickguard is rad.

In that picture it is 100% stock. Now it has a black/white/black pickguard, black pickup covers and a bad ass II bridge. Still no control plate. Action pic with me making a silly face.
