Members seilerbird
I just started playing bass and I have a question. Here is one section of the tab for Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds: G|--------------------------------|--------------------------------|D|----0-0-0---0-0-0---0-0--------|--------------------0---2---0---|A|------------------------5------|--------0---2---3---------------|E|----------------------------1---|3---3---------------------------| I am confused about the 5 . First you play 8 open D notes, then you play the 9th D note on the A string. Why not just play 9 open D notes?
Members guitargod0dmw
I do believe that is a slide. I'm not familiar with the song, but that just doesn't sound right. If the slide is a necessary thing, I would play all 9 notes at the 5th fret of the A string. Keep in mind that most tab is wrong...
Members t3ch
Why not play 9 open D notes? Because you can't slide on an open note. .... ?
Members derelicte
what you're doing is a slide.they play a D slide down to an F. basically, you slide on the A string down and hit the F on the E string. i guess the person who wrote this tab might've just been a lazy bassist who plays opens. but to get to the low F from the D string you'd need a fill to smooth out that transition. hence, the D on the A string. But as someone already suggested, i'd play all nine D's on the A s tring. Tabs should just serve as guidelines, take it for its structure and add your own flavor in. I don't know the song too well so I can't offer any alternative tabs for ya, sorry.

Members bassthumpintwin
you got that tab off the interwebs didn't you? since you're new at bass, I'm gonna let you in on a little secret: 99% of all internet tabs are wrong, and the rest can be played better. I would play 8 D's on the A string and THEN slide.

The tone man. It's all about the tone. Open notes ring more than fretted notes, but you can't slide an open note. And yes, they are.
