They occupy the same sonic space as the synth/keys and occasionally the bass line, too. Try EQing the mids out of the bass and keys and boost the mids in the vocals. That's definitely something I'm struggling w/, trying to mix it for better definition of the various instruments. I'm kind of a n00b at audio recording...
