The bassplayer - is that Herb Melton? He is a killer bass player.

Nope.

This guy is John Scudder, nice guy, good player.

..... I think John is out of the music biz,

he just does this thing w/ us sometimes to shake the cobwebs off.

....enjoy playing with him.

Wed Aug 22nd - Charleston, WV

casinopromo.jpg

VENUE~ Hollywood Casino

LOAD IN / SET-UP
~ complete chaffe at soundcheck.

TEAR DOWN / LOAD-OUT

~ loaded the Fishman and 1 Spot for the next day's acoustic show
~ talked to a lady who knows Nora Roberts (who lives nearby).

MUSIC
~ pretty good for a club band; boarder line embarrassing for a national act.
~ played "Motel Room" twice
~ I played "Stay" (again, instead of Steve). We've all had this setlist for a few weeks now but Steve didn't realize that "Stay" was on it.
~ Gwen put the acoustic medley from last year in the set. It's tuned a half step down (for her vocal). Jason doesn't have his acoustic with him (more production rehersal failure). He uses mine and I use the piezos on the Tele through the Fishman.

TECHNICAL
~ the monitors were God aweful. They were EAW too! There is no dedicated monitor board or cue wedge at the soundboard. What about last weekend's band? What about THIS weekend's band? Do they ALL endure this kind of BS? It's not like the system was JUST installed. NOONE has tweaked it out by now?? It's embarrassing for Tony (not having the right tools either) not to mention their house guy. Gwen has to stop the 2nd set to get rid of the feedback.
~ Gwen's (casino) wireless was clipping (photo deleted.......some kind of Sure wireless). The pad should have been engaged on the mic itself....also if she would ever soundcheck at show volume, issue like this could be resolved at the time. In defense of HER though, for a week's worth of sleep deprived as this, you can't just blather on at a soundcheck at full volume for an hour and a half and expect to still have a voice the next day.
~ backline bass amp 2x12 speaker was blown.....had to disconnect one.

FANS
~ none that I know of, although Gwen was swamped between sets.

OTHER

~ The host (local radio DJ) was singing the words to "Annie's Gonna Get a Brand New Gun". We have not recorded or released this yet and the compulsory is still good....This is bad news and a bad sign.........

WV-casinobackline.jpg
my backline.... no complaints...maybe a little harsh but is otherwise acceptable~ fix the abysmal PA issues first, THEN we can critique and fine tune the country guy using a Marshall........

Thurs Aug 23rd (Baxter, TN)

VENUE
~ Del Monaco Winery

cookevillepromo_zps0c867bf4.jpg

LOAD IN / SET-UP
~ The Taylor sounded stellar. I changed strings and put it through the Fishman.

TEAR DOWN / LOAD-OUT

MUSIC
~ alot of good moments but....
~ I forgot to count "Roll Down Your Window" in (which starts accapella ) and Gwen counted it off 20 bpm too slow (which is why I'm supposed to count us in).
~ Gwen wants "Motel Room" back to album speed (she's been wanting it 15 bpm slower).
~ standing ovation on "Motel Room"
~ I fudged the last outro/tag line to "Annie"; Jason usually sings this and we've never done it acoustic (see California winery show w/ Greg Bates post in this thread).

TECHNICAL
~ monitors were out and buzzing by the time Gwen and I got up (there were 2 acts before us).
~ thank god for earplugs
~ more tuner weirdness while the auctioneer was yammering (see CMA journal entry). I've GOT to get a clip on!

FANS
~ lots

OTHER
~ opener Rachel Lynnae (? I think). Killer pipes but screetchy strained tone at times.
~ Tim Duggers from Curb Records did a set.
~ had our radio and Compassion International rep w/ us.
~ DJ commented that he "really liked that Emily West song"...Houston, we have a problem. We'd been playing "Annie's Gonna Get a Brand New Gun" since spring and are cutting it in the fall for the next single. This is the 2nd time a radio person has already heard the song (from the writer/artist perhaps?) so we won't be releasing it as a single now whether we have the compulsory or not.

Fri Aug 24th (travel day ~ Nashville to Bismark)

~me and Gwen stay at an airport hotel & wake up at 5am and fly out from Nashville to Bismark.

~ We check-in and Gwen goes shopping w/ her parents for some chill time. She is recognized at a Target and a flurry of autographs cause a huge disruption in the store. In the ensuing confusion someone steals Gwen's bag of stuff that she just bought.

~the band and crew flew back to SD for the vehicles (and the dog) but Jason's suitcase (w/ pedalboard) got sent to Sacramento.

Paul....I see by your schedule that you are playing in moberly, mo????in oct. Thats about an hour away from me. Raced a dirt track up there for years. Whats the event? That town is pretty small!

I grew up 8 miles from Moberly, left the area in '80 and never looked back. Moberly was about 13k population then. That area seemed to have almost no musicians (although great appreciation for what few there were), but my little town Higbee (pop 758) DID host the Old Fiddler's Reunion every fall.

Another big thanks for all of your work posting to this thread. An insight into the Nashville scene was very cool as was the info on radio stations and the system used by the reps for getting Gwen and you in the door and on the air. A question regarding the monitor gear that lives in the Presonus rack....what is the piece that looks like 3-4 rackspace height and what appears to be faders on the front of it? Cheers! Dave

I think our rack is just the board and rack drawers underneath.

You might be referring to another Presonus I have in the Photobucket from the last date (in Moberly) that I haven't posted yet.....

That belongs to Six Appeal, an acapella group that opened up. ...not quite sure what that thing is. They had wireless units, a rack drawer, and amp, the Presonus and THAT thing..... Lights? Maybe some kind of dmx or controller??

They got real specific on their frequencies for the beat boxing so maybe it's something for that (??)

Sat Aug. 25th Lisbon, ND (Ransom County Fair)

lisbon.jpg

VENUE ~ outside pullout stage

LOAD IN / SET-UP ~ good help, water, camper, forklifts, taco salad, hotel for showers couple miles away

TEAR DOWN / LOAD-OUT

~ I take the Timmy, spare Loopmaster, Strat, Taylor, Blondie, and Fishman for days off in Nashville
~ I got my load out shirt but forgot shoes and pants, so I break down and load out wearing $300 Diesels.

MUSIC
~ good vibe
~ nice "Jump In" solo
~ "Home" solo could have had more authority

TECHNICAL
~ Tony has muted Gerald's mic (Gwen's dad) in our ears for "Heartache Tonight". Gwen doesn't hear him in her ears so assumes he's not in the mix and grabs my mic for Gerald to blast my ears with (the reason we HAVE a separate mic for him is to keep him from blasting me). This is annoying. Though many days there are interviews and meet and greets, Gwen (soundchecks at her discretion and) is free to relax and chat be personable in a good mood and not have to worry about all the little BS details (gwens stool, gwens fan, gwens towel, gwen waters, gwens setlist, gwens fans, gwens "paradise city" whistle) but assumes that a major production issue has been overlooked.
~ The rodeo (event next to and before us) has run overtime (they should have started sooner). Our 9 oclock start time is bumped back causing a huge crowd standing around waiting almost an hour longer than they should have. The setlist is trimmed by 7 or 8 songs and the World Vision pitch is bumped. Louis is pissed and isn't willing to go past the contractual 10:30 even if it means only playing half an hour. Gwen is pissed too but has more compassion for the huge amount of people that came just for her (see other) and feels that they shouldn't be penalized for the fair board's shortsightedness. You can argue both sides (and win) but one of the objectives this summer is to appease the homebase fairs (by playing and honoring their pricepoint while she still can). We're pretty good appeasers. The flow of the show isn't quite destroyed but takes a slight hit (by the makeshift setlist).

FANS
~ maybe 1,000 for Gwen plus a few that came over from the rodeo. Some folks have driven as far as 5 hours and there are quite a few Fargo people.
~ Keith, Leanne

OTHER
~ drive to stay in Fargo, Check in about 1:30 am.
~ Louis and Gwen fly out at 6am for days off.
~ Jason and Tony drive the Excursion (with the dog) back home; me and Mike drive the Sprinter back home.
~ Anne's son Derrick (Darrin and Kathy's brother)
~ new picks are distributed.
~ Next week's full band shows in Filer,ID and Moberly, MO are still considered summer tour, however this is the last full production show.

2012pick.jpg
got my picks just in time for the last show, great job In Tune Picks

could there possibly BE a worse picture taker??

Sun Sep 2nd opening for Jake Owen

filerID.jpg

LOAD IN / SET-UP ~ good help, catering, water, hotel

TEAR DOWN / LOAD-OUT
~ another minor fiasco. Stage hands head immediately for my mic stand and pedalboard. I don't need their help (it would take longer to explain what to do than to actually do it) I send them to Louis and Steve (who actually DO need help). Having to look for and ask about my mic stand takes an extra 60 seconds (it still has my picks and capo on it and is part of my breakdown). Don't just start taking {censored} dude! Now I don't know where it is and you're screwing w/ my teardown time and dynamic. Louis needs 6 minuetes before he needs help. The stage hands disappear for the entire load out (only to reappear in time enough to ramp a case or two down)....... I take the Timmy off my board and get my Fishman from Steve as well as softcase the strat for this week.
~ I nearly ruin the brand new long sleeve (white) button down (that I just got in Vegas) by not taking the extra 2 minuetes to walk offstage and change into a tshirt. I'm gonna need a raise or wardrobe budget (still waiting on that Wrangler shirt I ordered months ago) OR I'm just gonna keep wearing T-shirts.

MUSIC
~ I'm told it was a really good show. I recall it being average. BGV was decent (w/ minimal pitch issues) but could have had better pocket. Playing was ok. Stage show was better than the average bear but still doesn't have the same impact as the headliner (who has lights, ramps, and is almost 15 db louder).

TECHNICAL

~ massive 30 db jump in soundcheck on the acoustic. I suspect something else in their signal chain and none of our stuff.

FANS
~ Jackpot Julie, Jackpot Lori
~ front 4 or 5 rows sectioned off as the "special" sitting seats for VIP (most of whom are converted fans by the end of our set). I take special care to fling all of my picks past them to the general section peeps who are standing.

OTHER

~ Jake's bulldog gets a good hump on Angel for soundcheck
~ Jake's production is an exercise in irony :
1)They are on in ear monitors but ALSO have giant sidefills (for SPL onstage)
2)They have red Mesa cabinets facing forward but are actually using this facing backwards and use Palmers direct.

jowenbackline2.jpg

Jowenbackline.jpg
what they are actually using ("backstage")

~ It's a long haul for ONE date. We take a bus.Leave Friday and are back on Tuesday. One show.

I definitely understand Louis's point of view as well as Gwen's regarding the show starting later than scheduled. Ultimately, as a professional, you have to deal with a lot of {censored} that no one else really knows (or cares) about. They are there to see a rising star and if their impression is that the star has decided to not budge on the time issue, then the impression might be that she is a diva, regardless of the justification of the circumstances. I'm glad you guys were able to make it work.

Sorry to see the picks took so long to get to you. That has to be frustrating. Do you have any left or did you truly throw all of them out to the crowd at the Sept 2nd concert? 'Cause I'd like to get one. :)

Do those pull out stages sound as bad for you as they have or us? When I've mixed the gals monitors on those and stepped on stage, it's been like walking into a shower stall with rock stage levels... a muddy mess of stage wash and not good.

Maybe you're on IEM though, I forget.

I don't think Ive ever played on one of those and not been on ears,

I imagine there is alot of backwards throw towards the FOH

HA. Yeah I still have the rest.

I just came across this series of videos on Youtube. Is this covered in the tour journal?

Yes.

That was from the Hollywood Casino show for the radio station in Charleston, WV.

It figures that someone would post an entire show of the fly date w/ bad monitors....
