Live master effects

Just wondering what sort of effects people apply to the master out for live performances, both for a whole band and a live situation.

Im assuming some compresson or a limiter but at what settins.

Anything else that can help tweak a performance to make it sound a bit more professional????

Thanks

Personally nothing. Most people will have an eq I would say, Possibly a limiter.

Eq, to fix any system or room issues, and a VERY VERY little bit of compression. about 1.3:1 and no more then about 3 DB of reduction. very wide KNEE, slower attack and longer release.

Limiters on teh bandpass out puts of the drive rack

A limiter is not an effect. It's a dynamics processor.

Compressors are not effects either, but some people use them as effects. If using overall compression on a mix, where do you set the threshold? If the snare is hitting hard and crosses the threshold, the whole mix will duck to the snare. Bass drum, same thing. This causes a mix to "pump and breathe", not professional sounding at all. Gear happy DJs do this to their sound all the time thinking that they are improving their mix.

Use compression on channel inserts to control individual instrument dynamics, let the mix as a whole be dynamic and your mix will sound more professional.
