beginner needs list of all possible midi component types and a diagram showing how they could connect

helping a guy from another church with his midi problems and i have not used this for years

and he seems to be a total beginner wrt technology.

 

so googled but failed to find anything useful about midi with pcs in a home studio situation 

 

can anyone point to a list of  all possible midi component types

including both hardware and software.  at least keyboard , samples and synths,  connecting devices like controllers yada yada 

and a generic   diagram showing how they could connect

All possible midi connections and equipment would take a large book to outline.  Decide what you want to do, then research what gear will do that for you, then find out how to hook it up.  Best bet might be to make a relationship with a reputable salesperson.  I have always had good service from Sweetwater Sound.
