Floor monitors - Small bands, small venues.

For folks that do not do set changes, an active monitor (in reasonable numbers) makes a lot of sense when you consider the typically better sound quality when not operated by real pros. In fact, for 4 or 5 wedges in a club situation, I would recommend active. You get biamp crossover, protective limiting, anechoic eq., protection, power amps all in one well designed package.

No doubt that four K10s would be a sweet monitor rig and provide you with backups for mains in a pinch. It's certainly a compelling argument.

Active monitor rig:

4 x QSC K10s = ~$2600

4ch. of 31-band EQ = Have

Passive monitor rig:

4ch. of 31-band EQ = Have

Carvin DCM2004L or similar = ~$600

2 x RCF ART-310 = ~$1000

1 x RCF ART-312 = ~$600

1 x RCF ART-315 = ~$650

~$2850

A passive EV monitor rig would be in the same ballpark. MRX512M cabs all around would be slightly more. FWIW - The active ART310A is only $100 more than their passive box and is a really good value. I know we're not talking as much "power" as the QSC boxes here... but can say from experience that any of the JBL/RCF/EV cabs will sound sweeter when pushed than the K10s.
