Members Crispy boi
First of all I just want to discuss the techniques that I would like to practise. Then you can tell me where I'm losing my way or what's wrong with my voice and approach... I'm experimenting with singing low notes with a breathy, "softer" tone and adding more compression/brightness as the song ascends in pitch. . I struggle with Breathing and I think it's audible but I would love some advice therefor. Lately I've been trying to create a tension in the lateral abdominals up towards the diaphragm. Here's what I sound like though. Please let me know what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong. I'm experimenting with singing low notes with a breathy, "softer" tone and adding more compression/brightness as the song ascends in pitch. I've also been working on adding the edgy sort of nasal sound to my voice and working vocal fry into my phrases. I don't want the honky/bad nasal just the edgy pharyngeal voice I think. I struggle with Breathing and I think it's audible but I would love some advice therefor. Lately I've been trying to create a tension in the lateral abdominals up towards the diaphragm. Vowels/diction/breathing https://voca.ro/nPfi4XzUXAQ Hallelujah (Song practise) https://voca.ro/dTsyD7qZ7Cl https://voca.ro/jQaSaAsWhr0 Now here I'm really pushing that nasal sound as far as Possibly can. https://voca.ro/7OQMggOFGyc Which brings me to an important issue which is I'm struggling to think of someone famous who has the sound I'm looking for. The best I could come up with is Tori Kelly and she's female and I'm male. I love her sound though.
Members kickingtone
^ Can't comment much on that edgy stuff, as I mentioned. But I noticed a break between oh and oo when you are doing those scales in the first clip. It sounds to me as if you are trying to onset the oo too soon before you have shaped your mouth. Then you try to force the onset without having created that resonant space. Try shaping the lips for the oo a tad earlier (just as the oh is ending), and see if that helps eliminate the break. This is very good progress. You're starting attempt full sections of the song as opposed as to a couple of phrases. The main issue I am hearing is just a lack of breath support. It's difficult to tell without seeing you visually, but to me it sounds like your posture isn't letting you sing as efficient as possible, which could be holding you back. Try to maintain an elongated posture in the spine and let the ribcage float without collapsing upon itself. Also, I think during practice its perfectly fine to stop after a tough high note and attempt it again. Sometimes higher notes fall flat simply because the singer hasn't prepared well for the note, either mentally due to lack of visualization or physically because the breath wasn't paced appropriately for the phrase. Another reason why higher notes could be difficult is because the sensation of singing high notes feels very different from lower notes.
Members Crispy boi
Howdy Davie it's great to hear from you. Thanks a lot for the input and feedback. I just listened to Winter. I love the dynamics I think most of all. The way you were able to use pharyngeal vouce to pull you through crescendos is great. It's something I'm only just very vaguely attempting Recently. I definitely should practise that technique more. I was indeed singing with poor posture It's amazing you could tell from the recording. Ok So I just got done practising. I was focusing on the vowel exercises you gave me they're very enjoyable actually. I also improved my posture a lot and brought my spine into alignment. I hope the changes are audible and are helping with my breathing. I still think I'm also breathing in awkward places in the phrase as well as inhaling with a lot of tension like i just recovered from a near drowning or something. I need to relax. Vowels with Stricter posture. https://voca.ro/a9wmhaZDb1D https://voca.ro/7zWtMCdMQ2K Same posture for song practise. https://voca.ro/6QOYAiDC6nR Cut tempo down https://voca.ro/3yudvs4blqO

Thanks CB. I appreciate your comments. It was a fairly tough song to sing simply because of the dramatic differences in dynamics and colour I had to use throughout the song. 3 hours ago, Crispy boi said: Same posture for song practise. https://voca.ro/6QOYAiDC6nR This is good. Making a slight adjustment made a big difference. Your voice sounds more open. Once the breath flow is no longer restricted by inefficient posture then you can begin to control and manage the air better. Eventually the breath will become more steady over time and singing will become a lot easier.
Members Crispy boi
Howdy do. I was working on my breathing/tension issues... patience is key as always 🙂 Tone wise I decided to focus on the way I sing low notes (G2 and up). Members Crispy boi
Another practise session done and dusted here's what I'm sounding like. Playing around with different breath support mechanisms That's usually a good sign. When things are going right, the body should tire before the throat does. As breath control improves, the pressure on the throat and vocal cords becomes less, which protects the throat and as a result will increase vocal stamina. The abs aren't the only important muscle group involved, I find that the back rib cage muscles (intercostal) are just as important, which are used to hold back the breath pressure. Members Crispy boi
Today I mostly practised my support and you can also hear me doing some experimenting with my tone and placement and opening my mouth a little more. Please let me know what you think. Thanks a million. Members Crispy boi
Hello Singers. I Just wanted to celebrate 6 months of voice training. I'm not good yet but I've made progress and I just wanted to share it. As far as pitch when I started I couldn't even match pitch with the piano. This is what I sounded like when I started learning voice. Brace yourselves. https://old.vocaroo.com/i/s1pn1TGDul1n This is what I sound like now. Members Crispy boi
Thanks Davie for educating me on that holistic approach to breath support. It's really helping and I'm getting a good abs workout lol. Howdy. Here's what today's practise session sounded like. Listening back I can tell I'm distorting my ooh vowel a quite a bit. That's why I took a moment to focus on it. and and I'm also spreading/straining my eee as well. Any other advice gang? Thanks. I deliberately opened my mouth more as the key went up as well whereas I was going for a more nasal placement on the lower notes. Tell me what you think:) Vowelshttps://voca.ro/b0JyUmT69wU Not much thought process here I just sort of went for it. The only thing is I was going for a slight crescendo at the top. Members Crispy boi
This practice session i was really focused on my support and fixing my stubborn ooh vowel. Members Crispy boi
Working on vowel integrity mainly. I also noticed I was singing from my throat which I wasn't happy about. Members Crispy boi
I think I may have a potential solution to yesterdays issues. An unwillingness to open my mouth and actually use my chest voice. So i tried to address thistoday after listening to josh groban singing You raise me up. Please let me know what you think of my chest voice. I'm working on vowels. The ee and the oo came out not so chesty and my ah was hella breathy for my liking but let me know what you hear. Thanks. https://voca.ro/2pMKuzj0nH4 https://voca.ro/luqcFNXefWE Also as i was trying to see how high i could take chest I felt like I hit a wall at E4. It felt a little uncomfortable. I'm not sure how to proceed from there.
Members Crispy boi
Please let me know If I'm getting good vocal cord closure. I'm sorry for the noise In the recording i don't know if that's coz I'm so loud or something else. I need to work on my cord closure. Just for reference I was inside parked car across the street from my landlord and I was still worried about getting evicted lololol He must just accept that one of his tenants is a singer lol. I know it's not much I will be sure to keep the posts coming. https://voca.ro/8vslh8lq4IR https://voca.ro/gGBV663ICZk
Members Crispy boi
Howdy. I'm now determined to work on my cord closure and my chest/ call voice so I can stop singing breathy and gain a touch more meat to my higher notes around C4-E4. When I sing those notes with a breathy tone my throat get sore afterwards. Anyway here's what my practise session sounds like. I realise I'm straining a little bit. I noticed when I try to keep my larynx down the sound gets too dark for my taste. A also blew out my phone's mic again and I wasn't even trying hard to be loud. Members Crispy boi
Today I experimented with chest/Call voice.
