What the major scale REALLY is...

... it's a very beautiful melody. But it's been played so often that we now think of it as "a scale".

This is bad cause then when we practice it we often forget to play it with passion and thus it sounds mechanical.

Actually all scales are beautiful melodies. It's a good thing to think about from time to time and to try and treat them as such.

Please note that I'm not advocating the playing of scales up and down all the time when making music.

I'm just pointing to the "inner beauty" of scales.

Practice scales like you are trying to seduce a woman (or whatever you prefer), not like you are trying to pass a test. My former sax instructor (who was a bit of a horn-dog) taught me that.

If you can play your scales with passion and emotion, it will shine through on everything you play.

Well, I could have said it like thamiam but that's to long and doens't have the "poetic punch" of the thread title :D

Cause what he said is whatI meant, you should listen for the beauty of the scale when you practice it so you don't practice it mechanically.

terje is silly:D

Can't argue with you on that one :)
