A little lesson on Jeff Lorber's Water Sign tune, thought I'd share...bebop scale too

I had last weekend off from gigging!!! (rare) So, I was working on a Gypsy Jazz lesson over the weekend, which I didn't quite finish yet, but took some time out and spent a couple of hours on a cool Jeff Lorber tune that someone at another site posted with the premise that he had to play a guitar solo where the sax solo is in a band and need some ideas to what was going on and how he might approach it.

I learned quite a bit of the tune but had no idea what level of a player he was. I took for granted that he was an intermediate player. So I chopped it up in a number of concepts that were going on verbatim in the tune as well as chord and scale wise. But I also laid it out in a way I could show him some cool/hip sound to experiment with and pave his own way.

Here's the tune, and below are my notes. Remember the notes deal with what's going on in the tune and some further ideas to flesh out a multitude of approaches and sounds...

My reply, pasted directly from my response...enjoy!!!

------------------------------------------------

The whole single note intro is pretty much just G Minor Pentatonic/Blues.

Then...

The cool chords...

Play C Natural/Pentatonic Minor all the way except for the Db chord. For the Db chord play Bb Minor Pent/C Phrygian

| Cm Cm/M7|Eb Db| Cm Cm/M7|Eb Db Eb |

E---------------------------------------

B--4---4----4---6---4---4----4---6---8--

G--5---4----3---6---5---4----3---6---8--

D--5---3----5---6---5---3----5---6---8--

A---------------------------------------

E---------------------------------------

or

| Cm Cm/M7|Eb Db| Cm Cm/M7|Eb Db Eb |

E---------------------------------------

B-8----8----8---6---8----8---8----6--8--

G-8----8----8---6---8----8---8----6--8--

D-10---9----8---6---10---9---8----6--8--

A---------------------------------------

E---------------------------------------

For the F9 vamp

1. C Nat Min and C Dorian mix, b6 and 6

2. Play from F Dorian

3. Can even play D Minor Pentatonic for some cool sounds

4. Play from Bb7 or Bb Mixolydian

5. Put it all together and it's the Bb Bebop scale Bb C D Eb F G Ab A Bb :)

The vamp melody is out of this scale, play it ascending then descending to get the vibe:

E------------------------------8--10--|--8---------------------------

B-------------------8--10--11---------|-----11--10-------------------

G------------8--10--------------------|-------------10--8------------

D--7--8--10---------------------------|--------------------10--8--7--

A-------------------------------------|------------------------------

E-------------------------------------|------------------------------

Go out on a limb and try filling in that line with chromatics, sounds pretty smooth:

E--10--9--8---------------------------------------

B------------11--10--9--8-------------------------

G--------------------------10--9--8---------------

D------------------------------------10--9--8--7--

A-------------------------------------------------

E-------------------------------------------------

Now, here's what's really happening in the solo...

Lorber plays his solo based in a Bb7 or Bb Mixolydian, but the F9 chord has A in it.

So the G Ab A Bb give us a Bb Bebop scale, or maybe a C Minor Bebop, I don't know as I'm not too versed on the different names for Bebop scales.

The first couple of licks are in this area...

@ 2:19

E----------13--15/16--15--13h15------13--

B---14/15------------------------15------

G----------------------------------------

D----------------------------------------

A----------------------------------------

E----------------------------------------

@ 2:23

E--20h22--20--------------------------

B--18-----18--18--21--18--20------18--

G-----------------------------19------

D-------------------------------------

A-------------------------------------

E-------------------------------------

Those two licks could also be considered F Dorian, but remember the F9 chord has A in it...

E--16--15--13------------------------------

B--------------16--15--13------------------

G--------------------------15--13--12------

D--------------------------------------15--

A------------------------------------------

E------------------------------------------

Now blend all that stuff over the F9 chord and you'll have some pretty sweet spots to kill over this vamp! For something Steve Morse-ish play something like this, play it as straight 16th notes...

E--10--9--8----------------------------------------

B------------11--10--9--8--6--7--8--7--6-----------

G-----------------------------------------7--6--5--

D--------------------------------------------------

A--------------------------------------------------

E--------------------------------------------------

Here's the bulk of Lorbers outside lick @ 3:17

E--------------------------------------------------------------17--20--18------

B------------------------------------------------------18--20--------------18--

G----------17--20------17--18------17------17--18--20--------------------------

D--17--20----------20----------19------20--------------------------------------

A------------------------------------------------------------------------------

E------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I kind of reversed it and came up with something like this...

Cm

E--11--8--9------8----------------------------------------------

B------------10-----11--13--10----------------------------------

G-------------------------------12--10--------------------------

D---------------------------------------13--10--11------10------

A---------------------------------------------------12------13--

E---------------------------------------------------------------

Another great outside lick over Cm is to play that same lick but move the first 6 notes up a whole, this is something similar to some Pat Martino outside stuff I've figured out of the years...It's basically a mesh of C Dorian and C Melodic Minor when played here, so it's nothing earth shattering theory wise, but frickin' sweet sound wise...

Cm

E--13--10--11------10----------------------------------------------

B--------------12-------13--10----------------------------------

G-------------------------------12--10--------------------------

D---------------------------------------13--10--11------10------

A---------------------------------------------------12------13--

E---------------------------------------------------------------

Fun stuff, I had never heard this tune before and it was a blast messing around with it!

I lost interest in Lorber eh, musta been in the 80s; just sterile and unmoving mostly. This tune's pretty cool though. I must be getting the bug again.

Or old. lol

I wouldn't get too hung up on who it is, because regardless of it being who it is it's got some sweet stuff going on in the song.

And, to your benefit, the info is pretty portable...like how many times do you have to play over a dom7 chord vamp and play straight Min Pent or even Mixolydian riffs? Now you can incorporate some of the bebop scale sound. I kind of think of it as what I hear great funky sax players play. And how many times are you asked you solo over a m7 type vamp where you play Min Pent or Dorian over it, now you can add some sweet outside sounds that maybe you aren't today.

Personally, this is the first time I think I've ever listened to Lorber, I knew the name but never knew anyone who was "into him" so I was never acclimated to him. This tune is pretty sweet though. But it's the only tune I've heard from him.
