What is the best or most appropriate way to break up with a band?

Yeah, honesty is key. You should also be willing to fulfill any commitments that are already booked- that's only fair. If you think it's necessary, you could even offer to "train" your replacement if there are specific parts that he/she would need to learn.

 

Just some ideas.

Be honest and tell them why you are quitting. As hard as it can be, it will be your best way out.

Face to face.....

They may not handle the rejection BUT, that is their issue.

Face to face and explain your reasons as honestly as you can.
