i know they use vibraphones and rhodes, which is always good.

actually, i can't get into them.

in theory they're tortoise+american analog set+mogwai, which sounds great but they leave me cold.

but i just have from the vapor of gasoline.

have they changed much since that one?

they went all instrumental after that.

a data learn language is a better album in my opinion. musical growth, a more evolved sound I suppose...I don't really know what i"m trying to say. I like the percussion, i enjoy the guitar work.

the next band I'm in will have a drummer who likes Jazz. When I say "Art Blakey is great" our next drummer will say "You're Gosh Damn right he is".

and then we will rock.

my band back in vienna had a jazz student drummer.

kid was only 19 but was awesome and had a great sense of dynamics.

so if you ever move to vienna, i'll PM you his contact info.

you must mean...

"1 2 3 4

i think i've heard this beat before"

yeah, it drives me crazy sometimes.

so often the drums are adding nothing to the song, just keeping the beat.

sometimes no drums works best of all...

we tried out one drummer before the 19-yr old jazz sensation.

played the {censored} outta the drums.

his nicknmae was Keith becuase he played like Keith Moon--same energy, intensity, etc.

but he ALWAYS played like that. i mean, even Moon knew when to lay back or just caress the cymbals. this guy played like the song was a 3-min drum solo. afterwards our singer approached him, told him we dug the big drum sound, but will he be able to fit in with the softer parts/songs?

"no, that's the way i HAVE to play."

I don't think anybody who says "You're Gosh Damn right he is" is capable of rocking, but I could be wrong...

I get what you're saying though - a Jazz-influenced drummer is a dream find. Actually, a drummer who could spell 'nuance' would be good enough for me.

Art Blakey ROCKS!
