Digitech Hot Head vs Boss Ds-1

i know most of the forummers here only deal in boutique equipment but i was wondering if anyone has owned both and can give some advice over which one to choose...im looking for a cheapish distortion box

I'd go for the DS1 and get it modded. There are tons of really great sounding mods out there for it, ans IIRC, none are extremely expensive, and you can do some yourself with a little soldering skill.

The hot head is a piece. The DS-1 isn't great, but it can be had for ~25 used, and the Monte Allums mod kit is another 20. Find someone with soldering iron skills, and you've got yourself a great pedal

i never owned a hot head, but i have a "hot rod" which is similar, modeling distortion a few years ago. I thought it was fun to mess with, but the cheaper analog digitech models sound better IMO, just not as versatile. Bad Monkey is my main boost these days. DS-1's sound pretty awful - i wouldn't buy one....although you might look into these aforementioned mods.

I own both the Hot Rod and Hot Head pedals. Both sound fantastic. Hot head has a lot of gain and is a dry straight forward distortion with a lot of presence. The hot rod in DS-1 mode is a great edgy distortion. I use both along with a Satchurator.

i'd say go for ds-2. i personally like it better than the ds-1 and its more versatile, can cover the sounds of ds-1 plus some but both are pretty sweet pedals.

stock: i'd go hot head. more flexible eq = more versatile

 

modded: ds-1. there are more easily available mods, plus every kid who thought they wanted to be the next kurt cobain bought one, so you should be able to get one cheap
