Members mick411 Posted December 14, 2007 Members Share Posted December 14, 2007 Hey everyone, This should be an easy one for all you gurus: Whats the difference between a controller keyboard and a synthesiser? (apart from synthesisers being more expensive). I want to buy a small keyboard with midi (probably only 1 or 2 octaves) to use with my computer. Was hoping I could play in realtime and the PC would record midi in realtime....does that make sense? I'm currently using Cakewalk Home Studio 2002 with Windows XP. Thanks in advance! The short answer is that a keyboard controller merely sends event messages (via MIDI or USB) to trigger a tone generator, while an actual synthesizer (with or without keys) IS a tone generator -- meaning it has internal oscillators and can produce sound.
