Members forprescription
Not sure if there are many ambient fans here, but I was thinking of how I could improve my ambient setup and was thinking of compression. Anyone find it useful for clean sustained notes and whatnot? Thinking about it makes total sense to have one in the chain before all the delay/echo/swirly stuff, I'm going to try it out when I get my compressor back. I'm talking stuff like Stars of the Lid, Eluvium, Eno, etc.
Members Kayzer
A comp is really useful when you do tappings for example or play smooth solos with lots of sustain over drony stuff you are looping

Members Kid_A
after all my years of playing guitar, i still dont know what id use a compressor for in my FX chain?! What am i missing out on? The comps on my M13 just make the guitar duck down in volume, or it feels like that...
Guest Guest
I use a BYOC 5 knobber in conjunction with fuzz to get really long feedback.
Members Loxley
From what I understand, compressors are very useful in recording. Personally I never use one for playing otherwise. They scare me.
Members aeon
Compression for that use is a good thing, esp. when using an ebow and a vibrato pedal. cheers,Ian
Members knobs.
i love it when i play Earth kind of stuff. clean and lots of sustaini have none at the moment cos i still have to find one that hasnt too much attack.but yeah, you can definitely use a compressor in ambient/drone. Members saktr-iyko
never, counterproductive. if you want to maintain signal with all the swirly going on just hit the strings again, no one will be able to tell.
Members tape
I use a compressor when I play live, the RNC since there is always background noises in venues, this way I can bring the really minimalist parts up to hearing level and the deafening parts down to non-walk-out level. I dont need to do this when playign at home with headphones. it's especially needed because I often play with comb filters and bitcrushers, which can get reallyl oud accidentally in less than a second! this helps attenuate that. Members gjhardwick
i personally find that i don't need a compressor pedal - instead i always set up my amp slightly louder than i need it to be and then use a volume pedal/delay/reverb to keep the note sustaining. if you're into Stars of the Lid et al, you might like my music - i've got a new cd coming out next month - http://www.myspace.com/garethhardwick

Members Coma Larkin
I use one to level out the signal a bit, but mostly it's there because it fits on the board w/o problem (under the tiered shelf). If it took up valuable real estate I'd probably take it off.
