Members jhamnett
Hollllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee lord!! These things transformed my amp. I have a RCA blackplate 12Ax7 in V1 and left it there, but the high gain JJs in V2 and V3 have taken my JTM60 into new awesome territory. The normal channel cranked can get sweet Plexi tones, and the boost channel is now very JCM800-like. Definitely got a Van Halen vibe playing with my PRS's bridge HB. Anyway, I had the regular JJs in V2 and V3, and I gotta say the high gain tubes made a huge difference. Before, the normal channel got to "not quite" Plexi territory, and the boost was "not quite" JCM800. I don't think I'll get anything else for this amp. (JJ EL34s in the power, FYI)
Members HeartfeltDawn
Valves do make a big difference. I don't stick to one type in my amps. Mullards are great in the SF Champ, RCA valves in the Cornell Romany, and a mixture of RCA and Harma in the Voyager. I'm going the opposite direction to you and investigating some 12AY7 valves to go in the pre-amp slots.
Members jhamnett
Yeah, tubes (valves) are way important. I think that RCA I have in V1 has a great effect on the tone of the amp, giving even more mid-ballsiness than normal, but I think it's the GAIN of the tubes in V2 and V3 that are giving me the sweet tones.
