Yeah, foldback distortion is awesome on bass, and absolutely usable for metal. You can't go wrong with this:

I have the guitar version, but it sounds great on bass too. It has a built in compressor instead of the EQ blend. Both have clean blend. I think these pedals have something for everybody. I'm probably going to get the Pro Classic distortion eventually too. The built in EQ and noise gates make them even better.

I hate the odb-3 for most applications, but it works fine, is cheap, has a blend knob.

 

however, for that kind of metal I'd push an SFT with a RAT. the sft sounds great and will let you get some bass back.

 

a muff could work as well, as long as you aren't matching the speed of the guitars, and a bass muff, russian muff, bluebeard would all be stellar.
