Slash is soooooo overrated in my opinion. As with page. but they have an appeal to people which i can respect. I hate the word "feel" to describe guitarists. "Style" is probably better IMO. WTF is feel supposed to mean neway.

it's not a case of how quick & accurate you can play

it's about what you produce at the end and whether people like it

songs are more than accuracy and flashy technique, it's about feeling the song has and the vibe a player has

Crapton had a short prime. Angus is a riff machine, and practically wrote the book on power chords when Slash was still {censored}ting his diapers. Gilmour was a complete songwriter as well as a good guitarist, Slash isn't. His leads pretty good, but GnR had poo for riffs. They stank. Velvet Revolver does too.

So... what's your point? That Slash stinks? Maybe he does, he seems really sweaty on all his live shows. Guess that means he really stinks like a pig. Or do you mean that any guitarist younger than Angus has no right to play guitar?

I guess it all comes down to the point where everyone who likes Slash's music speaks in favor of him and everyone with a different music taste bashes him...

Lemme tell you, I also think he's overrated. We still haven't clarified what's "overrated" actually, but I think he is. Same goes for any guitarist that appeared in the media some day, especially most of today's guitar ... *gasp* ... heroes . I bet there are tons of unknown guitarists out there with killer chops. They would be underrated then. Until they show up in the media some day I stick to Slash, the Youngs, Gilmour, Hendrix and Kossoff. Oh wait, as soon as unknown talented guitarists appear in the media they're automatically overrated! Damn... stupid game.

We wouldn't even be talking about Slash if he was a 350-pound bald-headed guy from Omaha. It was all about his image: he was the heir to the Keith Richards/Joe Perry uber-cool wasted badass rocker persona, complete with a bottle of Jack, the dangling cigarette, the low-slung guitar. It was the hair, the hat, the Les Paul, and the attitude. Let's put it this way: when people can identify you in silhouette, you know you've made it.

While the hair bands were raiding WalMart for cases of AquaNet and yanking whammy bars on their neon superstrats, Slash went back to the basics: a Les Paul through a cranked Marshall, coupled with a killer image.

The riffs? Great. The technique? Okay. The tone? Too much neck pickup on solos.

The overall effect, though? Priceless.

I don't think Slash sucks. I think he's very good. But, GnR was really annoying, so I don't listen to ANY of his music. Axl is ubearable, so in the end the poor songwriting does him in.

I find the following to be overrated:

1. Shredders (they need songwriting ability to go with it like Satch of Paul Gilbert)

2. Guitar Heroes from rock bands that sell billions of records. Ok, so you can put a solo in in a top 40 hit, doesn't mean squat to me.

To me, a great guitarist is not one dimensional. Music to me is a combination of:

- Originality

- Musicianship and Technique

- Songwriting

- Entertainment value

Any good combination of the above elements leads to a good musician. They don't need all of them but they do need more than one. For example, some people can't play at all, but they are so creative that no cares and they end up influencing tons of artists.

This is an easy one: It's because people love his band. It's a lesser manifestation of Kirk Hammet Syndrome (KHS): You know, where Kirk Hammett wins guitarist of the decade polls left and right simply because he's the "lead" guitarist of of people's favorite metal band. Only in Slash's case, it's not quite as out of whack, since Slash is truly a great stylist, IMHO, if not an amazing technician.

OTOH, I think Izzy hasn't gotten enough love. Primarily due to his media avoidance and Slash's comparitively monster stage presence.

I used to subscribe to the UK guitar mags and they all seemed to have an absolutely incurable hard-on for Slash even a year or so back.

well, i've always been a fan and appetite is one of my all time favorite albums. i can see how people can point fingers because gnr was a stadium band or whatever and say he is overrated but they're probably jealous or something.
