I think I've recently read where someone talked about putting all of them down except maybe the leftmost one or two. Personally, if it's that bad I'd run a graphic eq in the loop to shape the sound much better (which is what I do with all Peavey amps, anyway). Possibly an overdrive boost in front of the amp might help if you reduce the amp gain just a bit (assuming it's already high) and then compensating for it on the boost pedal/tubescreamer/SD-1, etc. and shaping the tone just a bit differently on the boost, as well.
