Members JnBroadbent
KT88's are 50 watts each per tube, correct? EL34s are 25 watts each and running two equals 100, so will running two KT88's equal 100 watts?
Members shreder75
hmmmmm.....good question...I know some amps running a quad of KT 88s makes it a 120 watt amp...
Members yabba
it really depends on the rest of the output section (transformer, etc)
Members Weathered
It depends on the OT and how much voltage is going to the tubes. Just because a tube will dissipate a certain wattage doesn't mean that it is always going to create that much. A pair of KT88's will increase the clean headroom in a 50 watt amp, but it won't become a 100 watt amp, despite the potential in the tubes. Members Hua and a tele
Yeah it's more up to the overall design of the power section. Older ampegs the have the room for KT-88's will run at a bit of a higher wattage because the OT can handle and everything in the power section is run at voltage much higher than most tube amps. Example Splawn amps have a KT88 option and there amps still run at a hundred watts while electric amps has an amp that runs a quad of KT88's and that comes in at about two hundred watts
Members JnBroadbent
What about let's say a Marshall JCM800 2204?
Members Weathered
No - a 2204 with KT88's is going to have a different tone and later breakup than a 2204 with EL34's, but they will both be similar in wattage.
Members Verne Andru
Hmm - what about a single el84 like the V8? It's basically a new 5 watt Ampeg - would be sweet to kick up the volume a bit.
