Members Thrice_removed
I have a JCM 900 Dual Reverb combo, and was wondering if replacing the stock speaker with a Greenback, would significantly improve the tone - giving it a much more vintage feel. I am thinking of modding it to get rid of the diode clippping noise, but I was also thinking a speaker swap might help the tone a lot. Is it worth it spending the extra $$ to replace the speaker? Members Weathered
What wattage is the amp and how many speakers? The search function could help you a lot, along with a little bit of amp math research.
Members Thrice_removed
100 Watts, one speaker. Search function is utterly useless unless you search with only one term. And searching "greebacks" does not give me what I would like to know. I am just afraid that a 100 watt amp would not be good into such a low wattage speaker. I can cut it down to 50 watts, but most say that does not sound as good, and I am still not sure if a single greenback could handle 50 watts. Members peehoo
A greenback is rated at 25W handling. So if yours is a 50W combo, it better be the 2*12 version. If it's a 100W the only way would be to get a 4*12 cab loaded with greenbacks i'm afraid.
Members Weathered
No - in a 100 watt 1x12 combo, a Greenback won't work. Look into the Eminence stuff for something that will work. Just as a general rule of thumb, you want to match or exceed an amps power rating with the speakers.
Members Thrice_removed
Yeah I was almost positive that I the speakers should always exceed the wattage of the amp, but wanted to make absolutely sure. I guess I could flip the switch over to 50w and get two of them in a 2x12 extension cab.
Members Weathered
Or you could just sell the combo, get a JCM800 and a Greenback loaded 4x12 and really see what the Marshall tone is all about I think the JCM900's aren't bad, but the 800 definitely has more of a rawkin' Marshall tone, especially through a quad of Greenies. Members Thrice_removed
Hehe - yeah I am seriously considering that too! The 800 is just a little loose for my tastes - oh well I can probably fix that with a boost.
