Members Ispin1200s
Hello- I am looking to learn how to play the piano first and foremost, along with creating some of my own music. I was told and have read online that if I really want to learn the piano I need to play one with 88 keys, preferably weighted. First of all, is this true or would 76 suffice? I am asking because I am looking at four different used DP's. The Roland RD500 (which has some broken keys which I would need to repair), the Alesis QS8 which is in good condition. A Rhodes/Roland MK-80, which is in good condition. I have also seen an Ensoniq MR76 which I know is not a DP but from what I have read has weighted keys. Please keep in mind that along with learning to play I would like to use for creating/recording my own music as well. I don't have much money this is why I am looking at these older units. Can anyone give me some direction on which unit would be best for me. Jazz, old soul, blues and gospel are the genres I love. Thanks for any direction you may offer. Members 1001gear
What's your budget? If at all possible don't go with broken keys.
Members Ispin1200s
About $250. The only reason I was looking at the RD500 with the broken keys (says 5) is that I have seen some posts/videos online that it is relatively easy to repair. Members DJ RAZZ
Budget is important. The ensoniq is dated but has a lot of features, including a good recorder. What are the prices on these old boards? Something new may be better.
Members Ispin1200s
I just added another board to my original post that I forgot. A Rhodes MK-80 ($250). Roland RD500 w/5 dead keys ($200, which I think I can get for $125). Alesis QS8 ($230) . I don't know much about Alesis and if they make good boards. The Ensoniq MR76 ($250). I think I read that this company is out of business now.
Members 1001gear
Can't speak to the general reliability or the deal you're looking at but IIRC the QS8 came with realistic piano action and lots of sounds. It unfortunately had a so so Grand Piano but if it plays properly should be plenty of headroom for your ambitions. It's also prolly on the heavy side and lacking speakers. I'd look around for Yamaha Clavinovas while you're at it.
Members AnalogGuy
This site will help:http://purgatorycreek.com/ Go to the digital piano shootout. It contains a huge selection of different digital pianos and synthesizers/samplers of digital piano sound. There you might have real reference to the sound examples since each sound is created by playing exactly same midi file.
