Members JoshuaLogan
A guy made a post with a bunch of clips.... it's the same riff on all of them.... some of them sound really, really good. I'm just going to quote his post here. Ok, so I've done something stupid but funny. I made a chugg-chugg riff, really simple one, and reamped it through the AFX. It's the same patch, I didn't touch the EQ (LP80hz-HP10Khz), and I didn't touch any controller except Drive (with or without boost). The IR is my own, but it doesn't really matter, because i didn't do any tweaking at all. Oh, there's a "Tube drive" before the amp, but gain is zero. Just for the extra punch. Yes, I played bad. Yes, after 15-20 amps I wanted to kill myself, but hey, in the end it was worth it. I hope I actually found some new favorites. The guitar is a Gibson SG in Drop D. The bass is an Epiphone 5-string SG-3 through the AFX with a mix of an Ampeg 8x10 IR and a EBS Proline 4x10. Drums are Addictive Drums. The format is mp3, 256kbit/s, 48khz. Members mctallica1
I only checked out a few so far, but that is very cool of him to post that! GREAT UNIT!! FWIW, I am now an Axe Fx and powered monitor guy....my cabs are officially up for sale:eek: This thing is incredible and has completely changed the way I look at getting my tones:thu: Interestingly, my favorite high gain sims have changed a bit switching ti monitors....I really like using the cab sims and not coloring my tone with my cabs.....it opens up a lot more possibilities. One thing to keep in mind with this thing is : less is definitely more when tweaking. Very small changes make significant impact on the tone. Just sending the Axe FX straight into a PA and using the QSC's as monitors for yourself? I'm not too sure I'd want to use fullrange speakers.... kinda think i'd want to stick with a poweramp and guitar cabs... but maybe after i get my axefx i'll run down to guitar center and buy a pair to bring home and try for a couple weeks (so I could return them).... would definitely be interesting to try out

Members ENdtime
I really didnt think any of them were that good. Maybe Recto2 an dthe JCM 800 had some promise maybe if tweaked right.. BUt it DOES sound digital.. Listen to the spaces between the notes, it just doesnt sound natural.. I know the notes its whats most important but I think the feel is still not there.. And the Solo100 was the worst!! Geez it sounded like a tin can, I cant believe anyone thought that was best..

I am running the Axe Fx directly into the QSC monitors and loving it. FWIW, I had no intention of taking it this far. Had planned to use it through my VHT 2/50/2 with my cabs. Did that and liked what I was hearing/feeling enough to try and make a go without tubes, so I tried a Carvin DCM600 power amp. Liked that even better because it really let the power amp sims take full effect. After using it that way a bit, I thought it might be cool to try the cab sims to see if they were as good as the rest of the stuff. Ordered 2 QSC monitors from a shop with a 45 day return policy...assuming I would return them. When I initially plugged in to the monitors I was EXTREMELY dissapointed. I was using the patches I made for the DCM600 and my cabs. The only difference was adding cab sims into the mix. I fiddled with this setup for about a day and had pretty much decided to return the monitors. I then decided to give them another chance and started from scratch building a patch. Once I built one specifically with the monitors....and threw out my preconceptions.... I started digging what I was hearing in a big way. My basic signal chain is: Guitar----Shunt----Drive Block-----Amp------Cab-------EQ-----Monitor The shunt is there just in case I want to add something later. As you can see, I am not really much of an effects guy. After using this setup for a while, I started really getting the hang of it. And LOVE the flexibility! I have owned some of the best high gain amps available and feel I am giving up absolutely nothing using this setup. Could not be happier with my sound AND feel:thu: With that said, I m sure it isn't for everyone. It can be a bit complicated IMHO to get what you want. Members BlackHive
you should have posted these clips as "look at my tone!!!!!!!!" clips instead of advertising them as digital so all these goons would swoon over them and not post about "I can hear 'the digital'"

I've been using it with the band since about a week after it arrived, still making minor tweaks, but loving it. I use mine straight into the PA, and just put some guitar in the front monitor wedge. No separate amps or cabinets onstage. That lets me take full advantage of all the power amp, cabinet, and mic models. I've had LOTS of people, many of them players, come up to me at breaks and ask about my rig, 'cause they can't see a cabinet anywhere. When I tell them it's digital, straight to the PA, most of them don't believe me. Then they tell me it sounds like a great tube amp to them. As for the 'feel', if you haven't played one, you can't talk about 'feel'. I've been playing live for years, mostly through boutique cork-sniffery hand-built all tube amps. All of those got sold when I spent a week with this thing. It responds to my pick attack and dynamics, and responds to volume controls and different pickups on my guitars like my really good tube amps did. It 'feels' to me like my amps did. While I agree that it might be harder to get the 'heaviness' of a good metal amp through a 4x12 cab, especially if you're used to having that cabinet behind you onstage - the feel of the amp through the guitar is very good. And I'd bet that if you put an amp in an isolation room, mic'd it, and listened through monitors, you could very easily tweak the AxeFX to model THAT tone and feel very, very closely. This is exactly my experience. I don't feel like I am giving up anything using the Axe Fx. FWIW, I am pretty heavy into the high gain thing and using monitors, I can get the thump of my 4x12 cabs. This was one of the main things that would have turned me off of using the monitors. Even at low volume, I have always preferred using 4x12 cabs because it just provides a fuller/bigger sound and feel. I am not missing any of that with my monitors. I bet you'd think the same thing of a real SLO if someone told you it was digital... so you HEAR the FEEL of an amp now? You're nuts. If you mean that it's too tight, THAT'S THE POINT. It's metal. It's supposed to be super tight. I thought the JCM800 one on there sounded pretty bad for a metal tone to be honest. Obviously we like completely different kinds of sounds, but I seriously doubt you can hear the feel in the space between notes. It's no different than a super tight tube amp like an Engl. The reason it sounds like that is because the patch has a tubescreamer in front and input level cranked.... do you only play blues or classic rock or something? I'm not going to participate in some flame war over this thing, but FWIW I thought they sounded very "stiff" and digital as well. Those tones are totally usable in a recording, but tube tone it is not. No need to get upset about it though...it's just my opinion.

Of course it's going to sound "stiff" or "tight" when the input level is cranked and boosted with a tubescreamer. Most people playing fast, technical metal want a really tight sound... I definitely do.
