Members musicdog400
Someone gave me an old Lafayette amp (Univox U45B). I want to fix it up a little without harming its vintage value (probably $150-200). What can I change ? I need to change the pots at least and probably some caps. The tolex is a little damaged also. Members JonathanD
I wouldn't worry about the vintage value. It's not much anyway. Go crazy, do what you want.
Members guitarcapo
Just replace the filtercaps and any other components that aren't working. A decent amp tech should go over it. My problem with amps like that is that they use weird tubes that are getting harder to find.

Not hard to find, and NOS 6BM8s are less than $20/ea. 3Prong (grounded) cord, if it doesn't have one. http://www.schematicheaven.com/bargainbin/univox_u45b.pdf Pics?? Members thinkpad20
If its "vintage value" is $150-200, that's hardly worth worrying about. :poke:
Members musicdog400
Thanks for the schematic. Good tip about the grounded power cord, currently it is not grounded. I estimate this amp will soon be worth a million dollars. Unfortunately, a donut will also cost a million dollars.

Members telephant
I bet that amp brings the raunch. Ive seen the bass player in my girlfriends cousins band, Pearlene, use an old Univox for bass with his early 70's P-Bass and it sounded incredible. It had that classic, smooth overdriven bass sound. Members musicdog400
My neighbor (who claimed to be recording with Ted Nuget) was in love with it. I think it is ok. Clean it is nice, but I liked my Mesa F-50 better. The Univox and the Vox Tonelab are a match made in heaven. I cranked it a couple times it sounds a bit flabby on the low end. Tremolo doesn't work but I never use it anyway. A friend just gave it to me. I replaced the dead tubes and it works.
